Work environment
The Public Health Agency of Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) provides scientific expertise and laboratory capacity for infectious disease monitoring, detection, investigation and outbreak response to support national and international public health action. Due to the nature of the work and operational requirements, duties must be performed on-site.
Remote work or telework is not supported for this role.
Intent of the process
The intent of this selection process is to create a pool of qualified candidates from which future permanent and/or temporary vacancies may be filled within the Public Health Agency of Canada.
The positions being staffed will be located in Winnipeg, MB, Guelph, ON and St Hyacinthe, QC.

Operational Requirements

Depending on the needs of the position one or more may be required:
• Must be available during core hours.
• Willingness and ability to occasionally work overtime.
• Willingness and ability to assist, mobilize, or deploy to fulfil operational requirements including outbreak and emergency laboratory responses.
• Willingness and ability to work with human and animal laboratory specimens.
• Willingness and ability to work with infectious agents and/or toxic chemicals.

You need (essential for the job)

Your application must clearly explain how you meet the following
Essential Education:
Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology, Virology, Parasitology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Genetics, Molecular biology, Bioinformatics or Biology or other related discipline;
or
Current active registration with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) as a general Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) and current active provincial MLT registration in the province in which the position is located, or pending registration, while awaiting the Medical Laboratory Sciences National Exam results. Documentation of equivalent standing within the relevant jurisdiction will be considered
or
An acceptable combination of education, training and experience with specialization in science relevant to human health.

Essential Experiance
• Experience working within a scientific laboratory setting.
• Experience in the collation, review and analysis of data and results generated from laboratory testing or research.
• Experience operating, troubleshooting, or maintaining scientific equipment and its related software (where applicable).
• Experience in performing routine biological techniques or methods in one or more of the following disciplines; Microbiology (bacteriology, virology, parasitology or mycology), cell biology or molecular biology.
• Experience in good laboratory practices including safe handling of infectious material
