Research Assistant - Climate Services - Research Affiliate Program

Duties
One of the CCCS's primary responsibilities is the assessment of climate data and products, which are then made available to the public via data portals, web applications, extraction tools, and online processing tools (for more information, please see ClimateData.ca). The selected student will have the opportunity to contribute to this work and participate in a collaborative effort between multiple federal government departments, other levels of government, and regional climate expert organizations.
Possible tasks include:
• Evaluating the robustness of future projections of different climate variables for Canada.
• Supporting the development of new climate data visualization tools.
• Developing guidance and learning tools for using climate data for adaptation.
• Executing customized climate data extractions for adaptation to climate change.

Work environment
The Canadian Centre for Climate Services (CCCS) is an innovative organization within Environment and Climate Change Canada. Established by the federal government, the CCCS provides climate information and decision support tools to help build Canada's resilience to climate change. The CCCS offers user-driven climate services based on authoritative climate data, with the goal of empowering Canadians to make climate-smart adaptation decisions that lead to a more resilient Canada.

Intent of the process
ELIGIBILITY In order to be considered for this Research Affiliate Program (RAP) work opportunity, you must meet the following criteria:
• You must be recognized by the Canadian post-secondary academic institution where you are currently enrolled as a Master's or PhD student with full-time student status for the duration of the position (proof required).
• You meet the minimum age required in the province/territory of work. Persons residing in Canada and Canadian citizens residing abroad are eligible. Non-Canadians living in Canada should have a valid Work Permit for Canada (proof will be required). The position will be based out of Gatineau, but the opportunity exists for students to be based at other ECCC locations. The student will be expected to adhere to federal common hybrid work model guidelines.

EXPERIENCE:Please describe in your cover letter how you meet the following experience criteria. The student must be able to demonstrate the following experience: In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, experience can be gained through academic studies, professional work experience, or participation in volunteer activities. The following experience is considered essential:
• Experience analyzing climate data (e.g., assess the performance of climate datasets)
• Experience using scientific programming languages (e.g., Python or shell scripting)
• Experience using MS 365 applications such as Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.
• Experience with science communication, oral or written (e.g., explaining complex climate concepts in simple terms to make them accessible to a variety of audiences)

KNOWLEDGE:• Knowledge of climate science and modelling
• Knowledge of future climate projections
• Knowledge of major climate change impacts in Canada

ABILITY:• Ability to communicate well (oral or written)
