About the position
DutiesThe successful candidate will assist the Resource Conservation team in monitoring the health of the Park ecosystem, assessing the status of species-at-risk, and completing restoration programs. This work involves visiting less-traveled areas of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, both on land and in-water. This opportunity offers a chance to take in scenic views while developing hands-on skills in ecology, conservation biology, and natural resource management.
Work duties include:
• Surveys of forests, rivers, lakes, and wetlands, including temperature monitoring, assessing tree regeneration, and collecting invertebrates
• Surveys of species-at-risk, including Atlantic salmon and bats
• Learning to identify local flora and fauna, including trees, ferns, insects, fish, amphibians, birds, and invasive species
• Collect biological data from a variety of plants and animals, including handling of live specimens for tagging and genetic sampling
• Enter data into computer databases and learn data handling best practices
• Use and help to maintain field equipment for water monitoring, fishing, acoustic recording, and more
• Assist with Atlantic salmon restoration program, including release of adult salmon into the wild
• Other biological monitoring and research as required
• Participate in training courses as required
• Following Occupational Health and Safety protocols and maintaining a safe work environment

Operational Requirements
• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment
• Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required
• Ability to work doing physically demanding tasks
• Work may involve handling dead specimens and use of standard zoological preservatives.
Housing may be provided.
You need (essential for the job)
Your application must clearly explain how you meet the following
Minimum of 1 year of post-secondary studies in a natural science or natural resource management programs, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be a student registered for full-time studies in the semester preceding the hiring period.
Must be a student who meets the minimum age requirement for Nova Scotia.
Interest in learning about in two-eyed seeing and Indigenous co-management.

• Experience conducting field work/and or working outdoors.
• Basic knowledge of flora and fauna specific to Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
• Basic knowledge of computers and data management.
• Ability to measure and record biological data.
