About the position
Duties
Works closely with researchers to plan and implement experimental designs.
Advises on land allocation based on availability, history and scientific requirements
Prioritizes, coordinates and assigns work to subordinates based on scientific requirements and availability of labour and equipment.
Directs and coordinates field activities such as the planting, maintaining, harvesting and irrigation of research plots and rotation lands.
Coordinates equipment and labour with counterparts in complementary programs to optimize the management of fieldwork and equipment usage.
Maintains chemical, seed and fertilizer inventories; coordinates bulk purchases of pesticides, fertilizers and seed; is responsible for the sale of harvested crops.
Responsible for maintaining up-to-date records of agricultural chemicals in Agri-CH database.
Maintains up-to-date records of soil, crop, pesticide and fertilizer data for research plots and rotation lands.
Evaluate employee performance.
Intent of the process
This process aims to fill one (1) full time permanent position.
A pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various employment tenures.
In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, they may be considered for acting, deployment, indeterminate, assignment or secondment opportunities.

Security : Reliability
Possession of a valid, class 5 Saskatchewan driver’s license, or other provincial/territorial equivalency.
Ability and willingness to work overtime as required, including evenings and weekends.
Ability and willingness to travel.
Ability and willingness to work with chemicals, pesticides and other hazardous substances.
Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work activities including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 30kg)
Ability and willingness to work under variable weather conditions.
Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust, and noise).
Ability and willingness to control allergies, through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and this must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.

Education:
A secondary school (high school) diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
At a later stage in the selection process, you will be required to provide documentation verifying your educational credentials.

Experience:
Experience working in a modern agricultural research environment.
Experience in the application of field husbandry technologies to cereal, oilseed or pulse crop production, or the development of new cultivars.
Experience in the calibration, operation and adjustment of farm machinery or specialized plot equipment.
Experience in the application of methods and procedures for collecting and processing soil or plant samples.
Experience in the use of computer software for data storage and manipulation.
Experience managing staff, including setting priorities and functionally supervising staff to carry out field research priorities.
Applied / assessed at a later date
Knowledge:
Knowledge of field plot layout and design, and field research operations related to crop research.
Knowledge of the proper handling, application, and storage of fertilizers and pesticides.
Knowledge of laboratory procedures used to analyze plant or soil samples.
Abilities:
Ability to operate, adjust, and calibrate various farm machinery or specialized field plot equipment, as well as instruct others in their proper use.
Ability to recognize crop symptoms related to pest and nutrient deficiency problems.
Ability to organize, coordinate and supervise staff.
