About the position

Duties
CFIA Veterinarians play a key role in Canadian food safety, forming the first line of defence against the spread of many diseases. They help to maintain healthy practices in the food and livestock industries, including sound meat hygiene and terrestrial/aquatic animal health and within research and diagnostic laboratories. Their work includes educating the public and industry officials about the potential hazards of importing products of animal origin, or through inspection of animals and meat products. CFIA Veterinarians work in a broad range of environments, performing a wide variety of critical tasks. Some key activities include:
• Animal disease control and surveillance
• International standard-setting for animal health
• Veterinary biologics and biotechnology
• Import and export of animals and animal products
• Meat hygiene
• Food recall and emergency response
VM-01 – Animal Health Veterinarian
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, assisting in the delivery of the CFIA’s Animal Health Programs through various activities including investigating incidents of reportable diseases, conducting inspections of animal/animal products, ensuring compliance with regulations and ensuring humane transport of animals in accordance with international standards and regulations; working in slaughter establishments as required operationally.

The Agency has adopted a common hybrid work model that aligns with the Federal Public Sector. Depending on the role, some positions require full-time on-site presence, while others allow for a potential mix of onsite and telework to leverage the best of both in-person and virtual work. Intent of the process
A pool of qualified candidates will be established to staff positions in Quebec City, Quebec. This pool may be used to staff positions with similar qualifications, various conditions of employment and/or various tenures including term appointments, indeterminate appointments and/or assignments.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Applicants who have not lived in Canada for the past five (or ten, depending on security level) years may be required to submit a police certificate from each country in which they have lived for six months or more during this period, as well as other documentation required for the security screening process. Failure to submit this documentation if requested will eliminate the application from further consideration.

• Adherence to the CFIA Code of Conduct.
• Adherence to the CFIA Conflict of Interest and Post-Employment Policy.
• Compliance with the Values and Ethics Code for the Public Sector.
• Legal status to accept employment for the entire period of employment.
Any of the following conditions of employment may be required for an appointment:
• Medical suitability: Pass a Pre-placement Health Evaluation and Periodic Health Evaluation.
• Willing and available to travel, as required.
• Willing and available to work shifts.
• Willing and available to work irregular hours (e.g., days, nights, weekends, statutory holidays).
• Willing and available to work overtime, as required.
• To have and maintain a valid driver's license.
• To assume responsibility for making transportation arrangements to get to diverse and distant work sites in a timely and efficient manner.
• To use in the prescribed circumstances and manner all prescribed safety materials, equipment, devices and clothing.
• Willing and available to work shifts in different establishments.
• Willing to work in various locations, including third-party premises.
• To use prescribed and provided respiratory equipment that meets the respiratory program requirements; to undergo fit testing (e.g. may need to be clean-shaven, depending on the respirator design).
• Willingness to abide by strict biosecurity protocols which may require showering several times a day or abiding by certain restrictions on contact with livestock outside of the workplace.
• Willing and able to work in environmentally challenging or physically demanding conditions.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION
EEd1 - Graduation from a recognized school of Veterinary Medicine, defined as:
• Graduation from a veterinary school accredited or approved by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA); OR
• Graduation from another veterinary school and holding a Certificate of Qualification (Parts A, B & C) granted by the National Examining Board of the CVMA.
Applicants submitting education credentials from a non-Canadian institution are responsible for obtaining certification that these credentials are the equivalent of the Canadian education level required for the position.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION
Eligibility for membership in a Canadian veterinary association, defined as:
• Current members of a Canadian veterinary association with a license recognized by the CVMA; AND
• Non-members of Canadian veterinary associations holding a Certificate of Qualification granted by the National Examining Board (NEB) of the CVMA.
