About the position

Duties
Nurses in Charge deliver comprehensive and community health nursing services within remote and/or isolated First Nations communities in Alberta. They provide in-depth nursing knowledge, skills, clinical expertise and advanced judgment through consultation, clinical practice, leadership, and facilitate knowledge transfer through health promotion and disease prevention.
Intent of the process
The intent of this process is to staff one position on a temporary basis for approximately two years in Chateh, Alberta.
A pool of qualified or partially assessed candidates may be established and used to staff identical or similar positions at this group and level with various conditions of employment, tenures (acting, assignment/secondment, deployment, term and/or indeterminate), and in various locations.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
• Possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver’s license that allows the holder to drive a motor vehicle in Alberta.
Medical Clearance:
• PRE-PLACEMENT: Category 3 health evaluation*
• PERIODIC: Category 3 health evaluation according to the schedule outlined in Section I of the Occupational Health Evaluation Standard for “ISC Nurses Assigned to Isolated Posts in Northern First Nations Communities.”
*This position requires a successful pre-placement Category- 3 health evaluation. Exceptionally, due to the urgent need to maintain staffing levels in nursing stations, a temporary preplacement Category 1 Personal Health Declaration evaluation may be accepted. In this case, employees will be asked to complete a Category 3 Health Evaluation within twelve (12) months of hire to ensure their compliance with the Occupational Health Evaluation Standard.
• Willingness and ability to travel in small aircraft, off road vehicles and by boat in varied weather conditions to communities in remote and isolated areas.
• Willingness and ability to be temporarily reassigned to other communities as operationally required.
• Willingness and ability to perform on call duties, work after hours, and on weekends as required.
• Willingness and ability to complete mandatory education/training relevant to the position, including cultural learning and nursing in-services required for the role.
• Current valid registration as a Registered Nurse and a member in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION
Eligibility for registration as a registered nurse in a province or territory of Canada.
EXPERIENCE
Experience as a Registered Nurse in leadership roles (such as leading a multidisciplinary team, managing a program, leading a nursing unit and/or medical clinic).
Recent* and significant** experience as Registered Nurse in Public Health Nursing. This includes but is not limited to: postpartum newborn-maternal health, school programs, sexual health programming, and well child clinic.
Recent* is defined as within the last five years.
Significant** is defined as at least two years of combined experience with the candidate performing complex activities related to this task in a wide variety of situations.

EDUCATION
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution* with acceptable specialization in nursing, nursing service administration, nursing education or some other specialty relevant to the position.
*Candidates with foreign credentials must provide proof of Canadian equivalency. Consult the Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials or Alliance of Credential Evaluation Services of Canada (ACESC).

EXPERIENCE
Recent* and significant** experience as a Registered Nurse in one or more of the following areas:
• Prenatal, obstetrics, postpartum nursing
• Substance use and harm reduction programming
• Pediatrics

• Experience working in an Indigenous Community in a health- care delivery role.
• Proficiency in speaking a First Nations’ language.
• Experience working with Indigenous people or organizations.
• Experience working in rural, remote or isolated locations.
• Experience in health emergency response.
