About the position

Duties
The proposed PhD project will investigate polar perspectives on late Pleistocene and recent deglaciation in the Canadian Arctic and Antarctica using a combination of sedimentological, geochemical, and paleoceanographic approaches applied to marine sediment cores.
The research is structured around three complementary objectives:
1) Deglaciation of Nansen Sound, Norwegian Bay, and Byam Martin Channel (Canadian Arctic). The project will reconstruct the timing and dynamics of deglaciation in these regions using physical and biogenic proxies, with a focus on sedimentology and micropaleontology (e.g., dinoflagellate cysts and benthic/planktic foraminifera).
2) Holocene ecosystem evolution with emphasis on sea-ice variability in the Last Ice Area. This objective will examine the evolution of Arctic marine ecosystems throughout the Holocene, with particular attention to sea‑ice conditions and primary productivity changes inferred from sedimentary proxy records.
3) Recent deglaciation of the South Shetland Islands (Antarctica). The student will investigate patterns of recent Antarctic deglaciation at a selected site in the South Shetland Islands (specific location to be determined), focusing on sedimentary and micropaleontological indicators of environmental change.
The hired student will have the opportunity to participate in fieldwork and scientific expeditions in polar regions, contribute to laboratory analyses (e.g., grain size, sedimentology, micropaleontology, geochemistry), and present results at national and international conferences. The PhD thesis will be structured as a series of scientific publications.
Work environment
The PhD project will be supervised by Prof. Audrey Limoges (University of New Brunswick) and Dr. Alexandre Normandeau (NRCan). The student recruited as part of this PhD project will complete their program at the University of New Brunswick with numerous visits at the Geological Survey of Canada in Dartmouth. The Geological Survey of Canada (Atlantic; GSCA) located in Dartmouth (Nova Scotia, Canada), is a Canadian research leader in marine geology and has numerous laboratories as well as state-of-the-art analytical infrastructures. The University of New Brunswick, located in Fredericton, is a major Canadian research group in paleoceanography.
Intent of the process
The intention is to staff one student position for the completion of a PhD in Earth Sciences degree at the University of New Brunswick.
