About the position

Duties
- Develop building energy models and conduct energy audits to identify suitable strategies to reduce energy dependency.
- Perform experiments to acquire performance data and assess the suitability of new technologies in a deployed environment.
- Work with a team to demonstrate and derisk clean energy technologies.

The CanmetENERGY in Varennes, located near Montreal, leads innovative science and research activities to develop and implement solution pathways that create value as well as a sustainable energy future for Canadians.
Joining a team of young engineers, you will have an opportunity to apply our centre’s science and technology (S&T) expertise to test, develop, demonstrate and implement clean energy technologies.
The unique opportunity will permit you to collaborate with various government departments to help identify suitable pathways to transition towards a low carbon economy and reduce the energy dependency of Canadians, while potentially testing and demonstrating clean energy technologies in the Arctic.
Intent of the process
A pool of fully assessed candidates may be established through this process to staff similar or identical positions within Natural Resources Canada with various security requirements, language requirements or tenures in Varennes.

Operational Requirements

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Willingness and ability to travel within Canada (and abroad), including travel by car, rail and air
• Regarding telework, the engineer is required to work on site for the minimum number of days determined by Natural Resources Canada. In some periods, the engineer will be required to work 5 days a week on site to realize a set of experimental tests or prepare for field work in conducting energy audits or deploying energy systems

Education
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, aeronautical engineering, geological engineering, naval architecture or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

Experience
Building Applications
Recent* work experience in the following domains:
• Modelling/simulation of buildings (energy consumption and mechanical systems) using EnergyPlus, TRNSYS, eQUEST or IESVE
• Processing and analyzing results generated from simulations of energy conservation measures in buildings
• Writing technical reports to summarize results from building energy simulation studies
*Recent refers to work experience demonstrating familiarity with current modelling software and practices used in building HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems. While this is normally associated with experience gained within the past five years, greater consideration is given to the relevance and currency of the experience rather than the specific timeframe.
Relevant projects conducted as part of graduate studies are considered equivalent to work experience.

• Knowledge of the modelling and simulation process for buildings and energy consuming systems

• Master’s degree in Applied Science (MASc) relevant to the duties of the position obtained from a recognized post-secondary institution

• Experience in recommending energy conservation measures (ECMs) for buildings (i.e., conducting an energy audit)
• Experience in modelling/simulation of energy technologies or systems applied to buildings or industrial processes using programming languages such as MATLab or Python/R
• Experience in testing energy technologies in a controlled environment (laboratory setting)
