About the position

Duties
You’ll be working for Wood Buffalo National Park, which is the largest national park in Canada, the world’s largest dark-sky preserve, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is a cultural landscape for Cree, Dene, and Métis peoples of the region. The park works with eleven Indigenous communities, who continue to use the land for activities like hunting, trapping, fishing, and medicinal plant and berry picking. The 260 kilometers of gravel roads and 115 kilometers of chip sealed highway in the park provide access to these traditional activities and form an important part of this cultural landscape. Most of these roads are the sole access routes to communities inside and around the park, the largest being Fort Smith, a community of 2,500 people. This position is an important member of the manage team and with a small team is accountable for the sustainability of around 200 assets including highways, visitor facilities, trails, offices, cabins, radio systems, etc. You would be responsible for the execution of a modern performance-based operations and maintenance contract for 375 km of roads in Wood Buffalo National Park. This position will also oversee the capital work program for Wood Buffalo assets, as well as the annual construction of the Winter Road to the community of Fort Chipewyan, AB.
Work environment
This is a place of opportunity – to learn new skills, to try things you’ve maybe never done before, and to experience surreal landscapes. You’ll be based in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, a welcoming community of 2,500 people. Fort Smith is in Treaty 8 territory and the traditional territory of the Indigenous peoples of Salt River First Nation, Smith's Landing First Nation, and the Northwest Territory Métis Nation. It is a beautiful part of Canada with a plenty of cultural and outdoor activities to choose from. Along with good options for many of the common outdoor activities the region has world class white water paddling and birding opportunities. Fort Smith is connected to southern Canada by a year-round paved highway (one you’ll help to manage) and is nestled on the eastern Alberta-NWT border. Major cities like Edmonton are a 13-hour drive away, while Yellowknife is a seven-hour drive north. Flights are available into and out of the community daily. The Fort Smith office is welcoming and supportive, staff work hard together and know how to have fun. We welcome you to be part of our fantastic team!
