About the position
DutiesThe Data Engineer supports the development, implementation, and maintenance of data pipelines and data platforms that enable access to reliable, well‑structured data in support of FINTRAC’s operational and analytical needs. Working under the direction of senior data engineers or a manager, the position contributes to the delivery and ongoing operation of data solutions that support business intelligence, reporting, and data analytics initiatives.
The role focuses on applying established data engineering practices to assist with data integration, automation, and transformation activities. The Data Engineer supports monitoring of data quality and performance, contributes to technical documentation, and participates in continuous improvement efforts to enhance the reliability and effectiveness of data services. In collaboration with technical teams and business stakeholders, the position helps translate data requirements into practical data solutions while developing skills and experience within a secure, governed, and performance‑focused enterprise data environment.

The intent of this process is to create a pool of qualified candidates that may be used to initially staff one (1) indeterminate position, as well as other future opportunities for term employment.

Conditions of employment
Top Secret security clearance - You must be a Canadian Citizen and eligible for a Top Secret security clearance to FINTRAC's standards.
FINTRAC’s process includes a suitability interview, a credit and financial check, fingerprinting, a background investigation covering at least the last 10 years, as well as other assessments necessary to determine a candidate’s suitability for work at FINTRAC.
Candidates must be able to produce sufficient records to any period of time spent outside of Canada and may be subject to further assessment.
As needed, candidates may be required to submit security documentation and may be subject to security investigations at any phase of the selection process.
Suitability is an on-going condition of employment at FINTRAC and must be maintained.

ONSITE PRESENCE:
📍 This position requires onsite presence at FINTRAC headquarters (234 Laurier Avenue West, Ottawa, Ontario) three (3) days per week, with the remaining workdays completed remotely, where operationally feasible. As of July 6, 2026, the required on site presence will increase to four (4) days per week.

EDUCATION:
ED1 - Graduation from a two‑year program of study from a recognized post‑secondary institution (e.g., college or university) with acceptable specialization in:
• Computer science
• Information technology
• Information management
• Or another specialty relevant to the position to be staffed

EXPERIENCE:
E1 – Experience supporting the development and maintenance of data pipelines or data integration workflows in a production environment under established standards.
E2 – Experience working with structured and unstructured data sources (e.g., relational databases, data warehouses, data lakes) to support reporting or analytics needs.
E3 – Experience writing or maintaining scripts for data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) using tools or languages such as SQL and/or Python.
E4 – Experience collaborating with technical teams and/or business stakeholders to understand data requirements and contribute to data solutions.
E5 – Experience contributing to documentation related to data processes, data structures, or technical workflows.

K1 – Knowledge of basic data engineering concepts, including data pipelines, ETL processes, and data integration principles.
K2 – Knowledge of structured data concepts, including relational databases and data structures used to support reporting and analytics.
