About the position

Duties
Applicable to GL-MAN-02 and GL-MAN-03
Parks Canada is seeking a reliable, motivated and safety conscious individual who is experienced in garden and landscaping work from approximately May to September. The key duties include: lawn, garden and structural maintenance in the historical garden setting of the Cascade Gardens and other Parks Canada properties. This is outdoor, physically demanding work, involving the use of garden and landscaping tools and equipment. You will be expected to work as part of a team in a popular tourist attraction, and will be a representative of Parks Canada. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are a key factor for the successful candidate.
Applicable to GL-MAN-03 only
Operation and maintenance of commercial landscaping equipment, both mid-sized and small engine (lawn care and power equipment).

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
• Possession and maintenance of a valid Alberta class 5 driver’s license or equivalent and be legally able to drive;
• Willingness to wear the appropriate Parks Canada Uniform and safety equipment, including steel-toed boots and follow safety procedures;
• Required to undergo and pass periodic medical checks (audiogram);
• Ability to effectively repetitively and safely perform physically demanding general maintenance work, primarily outdoors, including lifting, carrying and loading tools and equipment.

Operational Requirements

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Willing and able to work weekends, shift work, statutory holidays and overtime, if required;
• Willingness to travel and work in various terrain and weather conditions for long periods of time.

EXPERIENCE:
Applicable to GL-MAN-02 and GL-MAN-03
• Performing labour tasks associated with landscaping and gardening in a commercial or residential setting (example pruning trees and shrubs);
• Planning and carrying out tasks in a team environment;
• Experience in the use, operation and maintenance of a range of manual and power tools and equipment;
• Maintenance tasks associated with garden structures and other assets (ex. benches, fences, walkways, retaining walls).
KNOWLEDGE :
Applicable to GL-MAN-02 and GL-MAN-03
• Parks Canada’s mandate, values and principles,, Banff National Park and its historical grounds;
• Knowledge of techniques, procedures and equipment associated with routine garden maintenance and landscaping, as well as plant identification and soil management.

• Basic knowledge of annual and perennial plant material.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATIONS:
• Standard First Aid with CPR/AED;
• Certification for tree pruning;
• Certification for chainsaw use;
• Post-secondary training in Horticulture.
