About the position

Duties
📝 Parks Canada is seeking a Radio Communications Technologist to join its national team. The successful candidate will support the installation, maintenance, and operation of VHF/UHF radio systems essential to operations and safety across the country.
Based in Calgary, and working under the guidance of senior technologist, the technologist will assist with programming, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning of radio equipment (portable, mobile, base stations, repeaters, etc.). The position also involves fieldwork, including travel, working at heights, and handling equipment.
Under supervision, the individual will assist with system installation and maintenance, basic troubleshooting, equipment configuration, and adherence to procedures, while also contributing to the planning of activities and on-site operations.
Work environment
🌳 Parks Canada, a federal agency, protects and showcases the country’s natural and cultural heritage. Its radio systems support safety-critical communications for activities such as emergency response, firefighting, and search and rescue.
The position is based at the Radio Communications Service Centre in Calgary and provides access to fully equipped facilities. It involves fieldwork, primarily day trips, as well as periodic multi-day deployments across Canada.

Intent of the process
This staffing process is intended to staff one EL-04 Radio Communications Technologist position on a temporary basis for the duration of one (1) year with the possibility of extension.
This process may be used to establish a pool of qualified candidates to staff current and future EL-04 Radio Communications Technologist positions with various tenures (e.g., term, acting, interchange), security requirements, and linguistic profiles in Calgary.

• Possession of a valid Class 5 (or equivalent) driver’s license.
• Environmental and Physical Readiness.
• Willing and able to lift and carry heavy or awkward equipment (e.g., lifting 30 kg items or transporting solar PV batteries weighing up to 60 kg with a work colleague over extended distances on uneven terrain at high altitudes).
• Willing and able to perform duties in inclement, extreme, or uncomfortable weather conditions (e.g., -30°C, high humidity, heavy rain, etc.).
• Willing and able to crawl into confined spaces to install or maintain equipment.
• Willing and able to climb small communications towers (under 15 m).

Operational Requirements

🦺 These reflect the actual working conditions associated with the position and should be considered when applying.
• Availability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call/standby as required to meet operational needs.
• Regular travel for field deployments, including to remote or difficult-to-access locations across Canada.
• Travel using non-standard transportation methods as required, including helicopter, fixed-wing aircraft, boat, ATV, or on foot.
• Fieldwork in isolated areas, sometimes without immediate support, to complete servicing, repairs, or emergency response activities.
• Occasional work at height, including climbing small communications towers (generally under 15 m).
• Wearing of a Parks Canada uniform and required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment in both shop and field settings.

• EDU: Successful completion of a postsecondary diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology, Communications Engineering Technology, Wireless Systems Engineering Technology, or a related field of study.

Experience in the field of radio communications in the following activities:
• EX1: Experience using hand tools and basic test equipment (e.g., multimeters, cable testers) in a workshop or field environment.
• EX2: Experience interpreting technical documentation such as schematics, wiring diagrams, or installation manuals.
• EX3: Experience installing, maintaining, and/or programming fixed, mobile, or portable radio communications equipment in a field or shop environment.

• K1: Knowledge of basic electronics theory and principles.
• K2: Knowledge of how to interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and symbols.
• K3: Knowledge of the purpose and safe use of electronics and radio communications test equipment, and how basic measurements are interpreted.
• K4: Knowledge of foundational radio frequency concepts (e.g., signal propagation, interference, and antenna fundamentals).

• A1: Ability to perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance of radio communications equipment under supervision, following established procedures.
