About the position

Work environment
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is part of the core public service administration named in Schedule IV of the Financial Administration Act (FAA) and is also subject to the PSEA. This being said, the TSB is an independent arm's length agency that reports to Parliament through the President of the King's Privy Council for Canada. The organization aspires to be a modern world-class organization that evolves and adapts as it strives to influence changes that advance transportation safety. The TSB has a strong reputation in Canada and around the world.
The TSB is a small organization with approximately 240 employees and 5 Board Members, including the Chair. The organization operates in a decentralized manner through 10 locations across Canada. Employees work in a collegial and collaborative environment.
Intent of the process
The intent of this process is to establish a pool of partially qualified candidates. Similar positions may be staffed through this process with various tenures, language profiles and/or requirements, location, and security requirements.

Meet the Occupational Health Assessment (Periodic III).
Possess a valid driver’s license in Canada.
Agree to deploy to accident sites where there may be exposure to disagreeable and difficult working conditions and to extreme climatic conditions.
Willingness to work with components which may have been contaminated with blood or human remains and willingness to be vaccinated against blood borne pathogens.
Agree to respond and travel on short notice during and after normal working hours and on statutory holidays.
Agree to travel within Canada and abroad, including travel by car, rail, ship and air.
Willingness to undergo TSB required training.

Your application must clearly explain how you meet the following
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in aeronautical engineering, aerospace engineering mechanical engineering, or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

Certification as a professional engineer in Canada with specialization in an engineering specialty relevant to the position.
Recent** and significant* experience managing and supervising a professional group in a highly technical environment.
Recent** and significant* practical experience in aeronautical engineering and aircraft performance analysis.
Recent** and significant* experience in conducting, planning and supervising complex engineering analyses to determine causal factors and the identification of safety deficiencies related to transportation occurrence investigations.
Experience with writing, reviewing and editing technical reports.
* Significant is understood to mean the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with having performed a broad range of complex
activities for at least 5 years.
** Recent is understood to mean in the last 7 years.
Applied / assessed at a later date
Detailed knowledge of aircraft control systems, flight recorder systems and performance characteristics.
Detailed knowledge of the methodologies and techniques for the recovery and analyses of flight data and audio data from on-board recorders to determine a sequence of events.
Knowledge of the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act (CTAISB), TSB investigation processes and related policies.
Knowledge of project management techniques and team management concepts and principles.
Knowledge of budget planning and financial management principles.

Specialized accident investigation course from a recognized training provider.
Possession of a Private/Commercial/Airline Transport Pilot licence
and/or aircraft operational training.

Practical experience in engineering related to the marine or rail modes of transportation.
Practical experience in recovering data from damaged flight
recorders and/or avionics systems containing non-volatile memory.
Experience in aircraft flight testing and/or aircraft certification.
