Work environment
The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) is a special operating agency within the Department of National Defence (DND). We work to ensure the safety of mariners in Canadian waters and protect Canada’s marine environment. We support Canada’s economic growth through the safe and efficient movement of maritime trade. We help to ensure our country’s sovereignty and security through our presence in Canadian waters. The CCG proudly serves 243,000 kilometers of Canada’s vast and rugged coastline, the longest coastline of any given country, and is one of the few federal agencies that provides direct, front-line services 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

This selection process will be used to create a pool of essentially qualified candidates to staff future vacancies in similar positions, on a temporary or permanent basis within the Canadian Coast Guard in Victoria, BC.

• Valid Health Canada Medical
• Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License.
• Willing and able to work weekends/overtime and travel on short notice.
• Willing and able to access remote sites over rugged terrain and work in extremes of environmental conditions on land and at sea.
• Willing and able to travel for up to three week periods of time.
• Willing and able to travel to remote areas via trucks, boats and aircraft.
• Willing and able to work at heights in excess of 2.4m.

Education
• Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in civil, electrical, geotechnical, mechanical engineering or a different engineering degree speciality that is relevant to the duties of the position.

Experience
All Streams
• Minimum three years of engineering experience pertaining to projects in one or more of the following:
o project planning and design;
o project management and contract administration; or
o project construction and inspections.
• Minimum one year of experience in an engineering role that involved site inspections or field reviews.
Applied / assessed at a later date
Stream 1
• Minimum two years of engineering experience pertaining to the design, installation and maintenance of one of the following systems:
o civil;
o structural;
o electrical; or
o mechanical systems.
Stream 2
• Minimum two years of engineering experience pertaining to the design and installation of one of the following:
o Radio Frequency (RF), wireless communications systems;
o IT networks; or
o marine electronics systems.
Knowledge
All Streams
• Knowledge of engineering practices.
• Knowledge of contracting practices.
Abilities
All Streams
• Ability to develop and implement engineering work plans.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Occupational Certification
• Registered as a Professional Engineer in Canada.
Experience
• Experience coordinating projects on remote sites with access challenges.
• Experience preparing specification packages.
• Experience in the design, inspection, and/or maintenance in one or more of the following:
o concrete structures;
o marine structures;
o communication towers;
o fire suppression systems; or
o hybrid solar-diesel power generation systems.
• Experience in the programming and design of control and monitoring systems.
• Experience in the installation of remote site electronics or sensors.
• Experience supporting client groups in IT related requirements.
Knowledge
• Knowledge of life cycle asset management practices.
• Knowledge of electrical grounding and bonding practices.
