About the position
DutiesThe Engineering Services (ES) Group at CanmetENERGY-Ottawa (CE-O) is responsible for engineering, technical support and maintenance services, including the instrumentation and control installations in all the labs and pilot plant facilities. As a member of the instrumentation and control team of ES Group, the candidate will help with instrumentation and control services to clients (research scientists, research engineers, technicians/technologists or external clients) on projects funded by government departments, cost-recovery or external stakeholders such as power generating stations and oil companies.
The current staffing is organized into two streams:
• Stream A: Supervisor/Team Lead (Bilingual): Responsible for supervising and leading the I&C team, organizing work, and allocating resources to effectively support scientific research projects.
• Stream B: Technical Advisor (English Essential): Responsible for providing technical guidance and specialized support to the I&C team and research programs.
Both streams require design, layout planning, assembly, installation and testing of control systems related to mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and controls and/or hydraulic systems as part of industrial research applications. The candidate is also required to lead the technical design and manage complex electrical and control systems projects, provide technical leadership and oversight to client’s research teams, discuss project requirements with project teams and consult reference materials, as well as to ensure all installations comply with Canadian Electrical Codes and Canada Standards Association.

This position is located at the Bells Corners Complex, situated within Ottawa’s Greenbelt, yet close to restaurants and shopping within the area of Bells Corners. Situated between Nepean and Kanata, we are close to the Bayshore bus station as well as the Eagleson/Terry Fox Park and Ride with bus access to the Complex. This location also features trails and walking paths as well as workplace wellness programs including running, fitness and mental health initiatives to boost employee morale and work/life balance.

You need (essential for the job)
Your application must clearly explain how you meet the following
Education:
• Successful completion of post-secondary education from a recognized post-secondary institution in Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technology, Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology or another similar field related to the duties of the position.

Experience:
• Extensive* work experience in automation and/or process control.
• Experience in working in a research facility with scientists, engineers, and technicians in combustion and/or energy conversion systems, or a similar field. This experience must include working on equipment suitable for hazardous environments (NEC Class 1 (Div. 1 & 2), IEC Zone 1) as well as equipment meeting quality assurance standards such as CSA Z299.
• Experience in layout planning, design, fabrication, installation, and modification of commercial and industrial automation, electrical distribution and process control equipment.
• Experience in detecting and correcting irregularities and malfunctions in automation and process control equipment as well as experience in setting up and carrying out preventive maintenance and/or calibration on instrumentation, automation, and/or process control equipment.
• Experience in the following areas:
o Control system software: Honeywell Experion and/or ABB Freelance and/or NI Labview, as well as Allen Bradley and Automation Direct Productivity Series PLC/HMI programming
o CAD software: AutoCAD Electrical, Visio, or similar
o MS-Office (MS-Word, Excel, MS-Project) and database software

Experience:
• Significant *work experience as a Team lead/Supervisor (ONLY Stream A)
* Significant is defined as the depth and breath of experience that would normally be acquired with 3 years of experience.
Knowledge:
• Knowledge of effective project management principles.
• Knowledge of temperature, pressure, level, and flow measurement and control strategies.
• Knowledge of a variety of electronic test and measurement equipment and tools such as multi-meters and calibrators.
• Knowledge of electronic components and circuits used in automation and control systems.
• Knowledge of configuring or programming process control equipment such as programmable logic controllers, process controllers, distributed control systems, and data acquisition systems.
Abilities:
• Ability to produce and read complex process and instrumentation diagrams, control schematics, and electrical drawings
• Ability to plan, organize, and manage priorities
• Ability to provide technical input for project planning including time/cost estimates, material and equipment requirements
