About the position

Duties
As a Maintenance Worker II – Field Crew Member, you will work as part of a team on either the Maintenance team or the Trail Crew within the Jasper Field Unit, based on operational needs and candidate preference. You will take day-to-day direction from your Field Crew Lead and supervisor. Responsibilities include:
a) Performing hands-on maintenance, repair, and construction tasks as directed;
b) Operating and maintaining hand tools, power tools, and light equipment safely;
c) Working effectively as part of a crew in a variety of field conditions;
d) Reporting hazards, incidents, or issues to your supervisor or crew lead;
e) Following all OHS requirements, safe work procedures, and Parks Canada policies.
Trail Crew-specific duties may include: trail tread repair, bridge and boardwalk maintenance, drainage work, hazard tree removal, chainsaw operations, vegetation management and brushing (particularly in post-fire regrowth areas), and remote backcountry camp operations.
Maintenance team-specific duties may include: building and facility maintenance, campground and day use area upkeep, light equipment operation, and general labouring tasks as directed by the crew lead and supervisor.

The Jasper Field Unit is comprised of Jasper National Park and Fort St. James National Historic Site (NHS), with staff located in Jasper, Alberta and Fort St. James, British Columbia. The Field Unit Superintendent is located in Jasper. In addition to Fort St. James NHS, the Field Unit is also responsible for five other national historic sites located within Jasper National Park: The Jasper Park Information Centre NHS, Athabasca Pass NHS, Yellowhead Pass NHS, Jasper House NHS and the Maligne Lake Chalet and Guest House NHS.

The results of this process will be used to fill indeterminate, seasonal and/or term vacancies at the GL-MAN-03 group and level within the Jasper Field Unit. The resulting list may be used to staff identical or similar positions at GL-MAN-03 or lower, with various tenures (indeterminate, seasonal, term, acting assignment), depending on the status of the selected candidate and operational requirements.

- You must be willing to work overtime, shift-work, weekends, and statutory and provincial/territorial holidays as scheduled. Compensation will be as prescribed in the Terms and Conditions of Employment applicable to you.
- You must be willing to work and travel in varied terrain, adverse weather conditions, and isolated locations using various means of transportation (e.g., helicopter, ATV, boat, foot).
- You must be able to live and work for up to 10 days in a remote location in varied weather conditions.
- You must be willing and physically able to perform sustained heavy physical labour outdoors.
- You may be required to undergo pre-placement and/or periodic medical evaluations.
- You must be willing to obtain and maintain a valid Standard First Aid certificate and CPR-C prior to start, or within a reasonable period following hire.
- You will be required to wear a Parks Canada uniform and personal protective equipment in accordance with Parks Canada Uniform Policy.

- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
EXPERIENCE:
* Acceptable experience = minimum 1 year within the past 5 years.
EX1: Experience working outdoors or in remote areas performing physical work.
EX2: Experience performing routine maintenance, repair, or construction tasks (e.g., trails, roads, bridges, buildings, grounds, landscaping, or similar).
EX3: Experience using hand tools and/or power tools related to maintenance, construction, or grounds work (e.g., chainsaws, brush saws, rakes, pulaskis, drills, grinders).
EX4: Experience working as part of a team to complete construction or maintenance tasks.

ASSET EXPERIENCE:
TRAIL CREW
AE1: Experience in trail building or maintenance using hand tools (e.g., pulaskis, hoes, rock bars, loppers).
AE2: Experience in vegetation management, brushing, or clearing.
AE3: Experience in backcountry travel or remote field operations.
AE4: Valid chainsaw certification, or completion of a certified chainsaw course.
MAINTENANCE TEAM
AE1: Experience in building or facility maintenance (e.g., campgrounds, day use areas, outhouses, picnic infrastructure).
AE2: Experience operating light equipment such as a skid steer, tractor, mini excavator, or ATV.
AE3: Experience with general building repairs.
