About the position
DutiesThe Asset Support Technician is responsible for the day-to-day operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the Miette Hot Springs facility, ensuring the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of swimming pools, water treatment and wastewater systems, while supporting building infrastructure in a remote, high-use environment. This position performs routine inspections, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs on Potable/Waste Water systems, pumps, plumbing, HVAC, electrical components, automation, and building systems.
They maintain water quality in accordance with Alberta regulations, Parks Canada guidelines, and Public health standards. The incumbent coordinates and oversees contracted maintenance and repair work, prepares cost estimates, scopes of work, and schedules, and verifies compliance with safety, technical, and quality requirements.
Duties also include operating and monitoring Building Management Systems (BMS), maintaining accurate operational records using computer applications, supporting seasonal operations and snow removal, while be responsible for after-hours or emergency issues as required. The role requires working independently, exercising sound judgment, and maintaining a strong safety culture while supporting one of Jasper National Park’s most visible and historically significant visitor facilities at Miette Hot Springs.

The Jasper Field Unit is comprised of Jasper National Park and Fort St. James National Historic Site (NHS), with staff located in Jasper, Alberta and Fort St. James, British Columbia. The Field Unit Superintendent is located in Jasper. In addition to Fort St. James NHS, the Field Unit is also responsible for five other national historic sites located within Jasper National Park: The Jasper Park Information Centre NHS, Athabasca Pass NHS, Yellowhead Pass NHS, Jasper House NHS and the Maligne Lake Chalet and Guest House NHS.

Conditions of employment

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
-Water Treatment Certification through Alberta Environment & Parks – Water Treatment Level 1 or Higher
-Wastewater Treatment Certification through Alberta Environment & Parks – Wastewater Treatment Level 1 or Higher
-Valid Alberta Class 5 license or equivalent
EXPERIENCE:
EX1: Experience in one or more of the technical functions which may include: swimming pool maintenance, plumbing, commercial building repair/maintenance, equipment repair/maintenance, electrical and/or HVAC systems maintenance and operation.
EX2: Experience with work site inspections, checking compliance with specifications, schedule and safety requirements.
EX3: Experience with estimating costs for construction or maintenance projects.
EX4: Experience with managing contracts in the maintenance or construction of assets.
EX5: Experience using word processing and spreadsheet applications.
EX6: Experience with the use of tablets for recording information.
KNOWLEDGE:
K1: Knowledge of building construction principles.
K2: Knowledge of Canadian codes and standards associated with construction and maintenance of assets. These may include National Building/Fire/Plumbing Codes, Canadian Electrical Code, CSA codes, and Provincial codes and regulations.
K3: Knowledge of general work procedures, preventive maintenance measures, workplace health and safety procedures.
ABILITIES:
A1: Ability to schedule, organize and provide routine asset maintenance services including minor capital/re-capitalization projects.
A2: Ability to read and understand drawings and blueprints.
A3: Ability to analyze problems in a variety of operational situations and develop and implement solutions through contracts or work plans.
A4: Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including the ability to write scopes of work for contracts; and to communicate requirements to a variety of technical and operational contractors in a clear and unambiguous manner.
A5: Ability to operate and troubleshoot complex systems and equipment related to the operation and maintenance of a busy swimming pool facility.
A6: Ability to coordinate and check/report on the quality/completeness of work performed by external contractors, skilled trades and maintenance staff.

ASSET OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
- Maintenance of AWWOA (Alberta Water and Wastewater Operators Association) certifications or equivalent.
- Maintenance of certifications for water distribution systems (wastewater and potable water) or equivalent provincial certifications.
- Pool Operator Level 1 or 2
- Transportation of Dangerous Good (TDG)
- WHMIS
- Confined Space Awareness Certificate

ASSET EXPERIENCE:
AE1: Experience with BMS (Building Monitoring Systems)
