About the position

Duties
Reporting to the Chief of Building Systems, the incumbent ensures the safe, efficient and proper day-to-day operation of all heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems; high- and low-pressure steam systems; central sanitation and distribution sterilization systems; compressed air systems; and laboratory water systems. The incumbent also performs maintenance and minor repairs on a wide range of refrigeration, HVAC, boiler plant, and laboratory/scientific equipment, including the Trane centrifugal water chillers, steam boilers, refrigerators, freezers (both standard and Ultra-low-temperature types), cold rooms and incubators, ice machines, laboratory water treatment equipment, the hazardous waste incinerators, and biowaste cooking equipment; and performs other duties.

Intent of the process
A pool of qualified candidates will be established. This pool may be used to staff positions with similar qualifications, various conditions of employment and/or various tenures including term appointments, indeterminate appointments, acting appointments and/or assignments.
The immediate need is to staff a temporary position with an English Essential language profile.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Applicants who have not lived in Canada for the past five (or ten, depending on security level) years may be required to submit a police certificate from each country in which they have lived for six months or more during this period, as well as other documentation required for the security screening process. Failure to submit this documentation if requested will eliminate the application from further consideration.

The following conditions of employment are required for an appointment:
• Adherence to the CFIA Code of Conduct.
• Adherence to the CFIA Conflict of Interest and Post-Employment Policy.
• Compliance with the Values and Ethics Code for the Public Sector.
• Legal status to accept employment for the entire period of employment.
Any of the following conditions of employment may be required for an appointment:
• Willing and available to work shifts.
• Willing and available to work irregular hours (e.g., days, nights, weekends, statutory holidays).
• Willing and available to work overtime, as required.
• To have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• To use in the prescribed circumstances and manner all prescribed safety materials, equipment, devices and clothing.
• To use prescribed and provided respiratory equipment that meets the respiratory program requirements; to undergo fit testing (e.g. may need to be clean-shaven, depending on the respirator design).
• Willing and able to work in environmentally challenging or physically demanding conditions.
• Willing and able to carry and wear 20 kg of protective equipment while performing duties.
• To successfully complete Fall Arrest and Rescue Training.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION
EEd1 - A Fourth-Class Prince Edward Island Power Engineer Certificate or higher, or an equivalent certificate from another province that is eligible for transfer to Prince Edward Island.

Applicants submitting education credentials from a non-Canadian institution are responsible for obtaining certification that these credentials are the equivalent of the Canadian education level required for the position.

EE1 Experience in the operation and maintenance of a lower pressure hot water heating plant
EE2 Experience in the operation and maintenance of a high‑pressure steam plant
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE
EK1 Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of building heating systems and equipment
EK2 Knowledge of Preventative Maintenance Programs theory, practice and applications
EK3 Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations relevant to the maintenance and operations of building mechanical systems
ESSENTIAL ABILITIES AND SKILLS
EA1 Ability to troubleshoot mechanical system failures and malfunctions to initiate or propose solutions
EA2 Ability to work under pressure
EA3 Ability to read mechanical schematics and diagrams
