About the position

Duties
Bring your technical expertise to a role where you directly shape and support the security systems that protect people, assets, and operations. As an SSM Senior Technologist, you will play a key role in designing, optimizing, and maintaining cutting‑edge security technologies while collaborating with experts across the organization.
What You’ll Do:
Turn business needs into smart technical solutions by analyzing operational and security requirements, identifying integration opportunities, and recommending innovative system designs that strengthen our overall security program.
Engineer and enhance advanced detection technologies by designing, developing , testing , and maintaining a range of security systems— including X‑ray technology, security screening portals, and high‑performance camera systems—ensuring they operate reliably and effectively.
Lead hands‑on system deployment by overseeing or supporting the installation, commissioning, and operation of electrical and electronic systems, helping bring new technologies from concept to reality.
Diagnose and optimize system performance by conducting detailed testing and analysis of electrical and electronic components and assemblies to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and compliance.
Collaborate to deliver secure, integrated solutions by working closely with internal partners and external stakeholders to implement technical solutions that meet business goals and uphold system integrity.
Support the people who rely on our systems by providing client-focused support by maintaining data accuracy, managing user access, and ensuring system configurations remain up to date.
Keep knowledge organized and accessible by maintaining clear, accurate records and technical documentation to support continuity, compliance, and future system enhancements.
Work environment
The Parliamentary Protective Service (PPS) is a separate and distinct organization and is not subject to the Public Service Employment Act. PPS has its own classification, compensation system and staffing regime. Persons appointed to PPS continue to be part of the federal government and will receive the public service pension plan and public service insurance benefits plan.

Intent of the process
The purpose of this recruitment and selection process is to establish a pool of qualified or partially qualified candidates to staff one (1) term position for up to three (3) years.
The pool may also be used in the future to staff similar positions on a term or indeterminate basis within the PPS and for other organizations.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - All candidates must be eligible to obtain both a Site Access Clearance and an Enhanced Reliability Status or a Secret or Top-Secret clearance. The process involves a background investigation that includes:
• a loyalty assessment;
• law enforcement verifications;
• credit and financial verifications;
• a security interview wherein questions may include (but not limited to), previous employment, online activities, financial situation, alcohol and/or drug use;
• personal references as well as previous employers will also be contacted as part of the security screening process.
• You must also consent to complete a personal history questionnaire, be fingerprinted, and be photographed.

Operational Requirements

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Willingness and ability to occasionally work overtime on short notice.
Willingness and ability to work outdoors in challenging weather conditions.
Ability to work safely in dusty environments or confined spaces.
Ability to lift up to 12 kg and climb ladders.
Ability to walk long distances as required.

EDUCATION:
A high school diploma with:
• Completion of an acceptable training program in physical security, or
• Completion of a program in electronics technology.
OR
• An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

EXPERIENCES:
E1 - Recent* experience managing or maintaining technical security systems within a commercial environment or a government physical security program.
This may include electronic access control systems (e.g., card readers, biometrics), security scanning technologies (e.g., metal detection, X ray), intrusion detection systems (passive and active), and video surveillance systems (VSS).
E2 - Experience providing technical guidance on the maintenance and design of security technology installations or layouts, which includes access control systems or, video surveillance systems (VSS) or, X ray screening equipment, or other physical security control measures.
E3 - Experience in the implementation and/or configuration of network-enabled security devices.
E4 - Experience overseeing, monitoring, and inspecting work performed by external service providers to ensure quality, compliance, and adherence to project requirements.
E5 - Experience in drafting technical documentation, user-guides, and requirements documents.
DEFINITION: *Recent means within the past five (5) years.

ASSETS:
AE1 - Completion of industry certifications in physical security (APP, CPP, or PSP).
AE2 - Completion of the HI-SCAN HiTrax 1 and 2 technical courses.
AE3 - Experience in a federal government security division program, law enforcement, or military in areas related to physical security and/or security operations.
AE4 - Experience managing and conducting technical trials, performance evaluations, or audits of security systems and equipment.
AE5 - Recent* experience in creating Statements of Work (SOW), Requests for Quotes (RFQ) and Requests for Proposals (RFP), as well as conducting bid evaluations for RFQs and RFPs.
AE6 - Experience in providing integration, installation, servicing, troubleshooting, maintenance and programming of key control systems, video management software, X-Ray Systems, and/or personnel screening systems.
AE7 - Experience as a security systems integrator.
AE8 - Experience in the creation of requirements documents.
DEFINITION: *Recent means within the past five (5) years.
ASSET KNOWLEDGE:
AK1 - Knowledge of Physical Security methodologies and potential defeat methodologies.
AK2 - Knowledge of the core elements of physical security design.
