About the position
Duties
This position provides logistical, technical and analytical support, with a focus on maintaining ecological integrity of Wapusk National Park. The position plays a key role in the Resource Conservation team in support of science and monitoring. The position contributes to various aspects of research and monitoring and active management, including recommending methods, preparing field programs, conducting and/or overseeing field activities, following proper protocols and safe work practices, data collection, entry, and management, proper equipment use and maintenance, coordinating and sourcing equipment/repairs, logistical planning and project scheduling, developing contracts, providing input on Resource Conservation programs and documents.
This position also supports writing reports, protocols or the other technical documents in support of program operations and the impact assessment needs in Wapusk National Park. This position has a year-round field component and is an excellent opportunity for someone who wishes to build on their significant field skills in a subarctic setting across many fields of study through a variety of seasons.
Other duties may include working with community and Indigenous stakeholders to maintain positive working relationship, supervising staff and students in field operations, assisting with Visitor Safety program, participating in human-wildlife coexistence program.

Wapusk NP is an 11,475 km2 remote National Park on the west coast of Hudson Bay in Northern Manitoba. The Manitoba Field Unit covers the south and north portions of the province. Wapusk National Park and seven national historic sites make up the field unit. This position is based in Churchill, Manitoba with the focus on Wapusk National Park and the National Historic Sites (York Factory NHS and Prince of Wales Fort NHS). The National Historic sites are both important components of the fur-trade story and the relationships between English, French and Indigenous peoples. About Churchill: This is the gateway community for Wapusk and York Factory and Prince of Wales Fort NHS. It is on the western shores of Hudson Bay, at the mouth of the Churchill River. It has a population of around 800, comprised of Cree, Dene, Inuit, Métis and non-Indigenous people. Churchill is an isolated community, accessible by air and rail. Summers have almost perpetual daylight, while winters offer opportunities for aurora viewing. Churchill offers excellent nature-based opportunities for recreation, such as paddling and snowshoeing, with town amenities including a grocery store, post office, bank, gas station, elementary and high schools, library, recreational facility (gymnasium, fitness centre, hockey arena (seasonal), curling rink, swimming pool), hotels, airport, RCMP detachment, volunteer fire department and health centre (Emergency room, Northern Medical Unit (doctors), Pharmacy, Lab Works).
The Resource Conservation team is responsible for delivering programs that include ecological integrity monitoring, active ecosystem management, species at risk protection and recovery, impact assessment, and ecological restoration. Resource Conservation staff also support the field unit in such activities as research permitting, providing scientific advice and support to park managers, working with external partners, and contributing to visitor programs and incident response operations.
Intent of the process
The immediate need is to staff one (1) full-time term position until March 2029. This process may be used to create a list of qualified candidates to staff similar positions with various tenures, security levels or linguistic requirements in the same or other parts of the country.

a) Any person/resident within local government district of Churchill*,
b) Any person/resident in any settlement along Canadian National Railway “Bay Line” from Bird northward, and
c) Any member of Fox Lake or York Factory First Nations.
*Note: Must have resided in Churchill for at least 6 months immediately before the closing date for this competition.

Your application must clearly explain how you meet the following
Graduation with a degree from a recognized university with specialization in environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g. biology, ecology) or other discipline relevant to the position, or an acceptable combination of two years of a post-secondary program related to environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g. biology, ecology), training and experience in a field related to the position.

• Significant* experience in travelling or working in the front and backcountry environments on multiday trips using various modes of travel in all seasons
• Experience leading two (2) or more phases of field research projects (design, logistics, synthesis of background information, definition of data/sample collection requirements, data/sample analysis, presentation of results).
• Experience preparing technical/scientific reports, manuscripts drafts, protocols, impact assessments, presentations, web site information, public presentations or displays.
• Experience using a variety of computer applications for collecting, entering and managing data and report writing (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, databases, Geographic Information Systems, etc.)
• Ability to follow appropriate protocols for sample/data collection and compilation, and to report on issues appropriately
• Ability to foster working relationship with Indigenous communities, stakeholders, external research partners and multi-jurisdictional teams
• Ability to schedule and coordinate work, set standards and priorities in field work for science and monitoring
• Ability to prepare and present scientific and assessment reports and to communicate with a variety of audiences using a variety of techniques
