About the position

Duties
• Supervise and perform activities for maintenance of research plants in the greenhouse and the growth chamber related to scientific programs.
• Conducts performance reviews with staff, encourages open communication, and nurtures a strong working environment.
• Monitor and identify problems in greenhouse and growth chamber operations and discuss concerns with researchers and/or technical staff responsible for the experiments or projects.
• Define work procedures and schedules, assign tasks to specialized and non-specialized workers, provide necessary instructions, and supervise activities.
• Inspect all equipment and facilities to ensure they are in good working condition.
Work environment
The Ottawa Research and Development Centre (Ottawa RDC) located in Ottawa, Ontario was established in 1886 by the Government of Canada under The Experimental Farm Station Act. It is one of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's (AAFC) network of 20 research and development centres.
Ottawa Research and Development Centre’s regional mandate is to develop new and improved spring and winter wheat, oats, barley, corn and short-season soybeans varieties and investigate agronomic practices and technologies for eastern Canada.
The Centre houses several national biological collections and leads biosystematics research on insects/arachnids/nematodes, fungi/bacteria and vascular plants relevant to agriculture, including biological control of invasive species. Ottawa RDC leads national research in carbon and nitrogen cycling in air, water and soil. In addition, the National Identification Services (NIS) helps various agencies by providing authoritative identification of insects/nematodes, plants, fungi, and bacteria as required by various federal and provincial legislations.
Intent of the process
This is an anticipatory process to address future needs: The potential intent is to staff one full-time permanent position.
A pool of qualified and/or partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures.

Ability and willingness to obtain a Provincial Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate.
Ability and willingness to work overtime including evenings and weekends.

Experience:
Experience in the management, operation and maintenance of a modern greenhouse facility.
Experience in integrated pest management practices supporting the production of greenhouse crops.
Experience using common office software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, or equivalent other comparable software.
Applied / assessed at a later date
Knowledge:
Knowledge of plant nutrition, propagation and production methods in a modern greenhouse.
Knowledge of how to manage, operate and maintain a modern greenhouse facility.
Knowledge of integrated pest management practices.

The intent is to proceed with a bilingual imperative appointment and to staff this position with a candidate who already meets the bilingual requirements.
