About the position

Duties
Student Employees with the Waterton Lakes Field Unit perform a wide range of work that includes, but is not limited to:
Garbage and recycling collection, grounds maintenance, highway maintenance
janitorial, working with the public, customer service, environmental monitoring, vegetation restoration, scientific data management, farm maintenance, working with animals, outreach, external and internal communications, data management,
Intent of the process
To create a pool of qualified applicants for potential student positions at the Waterton Lakes Field Unit, including Bar U Ranch NHS, for the 2026 operational season. This process may be used to fill vacancies across all departments. Student terms will range from 2 to 4 months.

Operational Requirements

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• To wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment as directed.
• To work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays as assigned.
• To work and travel in varied terrain, isolated locations, and changing weather conditions

GENERAL EXPERIENCE
• Experience providing information and service to the public
• Experience working in a team environment
BAR U RANCH - Maintenance
• Students will be expected to complete manual labour tasks including but not limited to mowing, janitorial, feeding and watering livestock, etc.
• Students will be required to assist in restoration projects. This includes the use of various hand tools and following specific instructions on methods and practices.
• Students will assist in farming operations. This may require driving tractors and performing general maintenance on machinery with instruction and oversight of Parks Canada staff.
BAR U RANCH - Interpretation
• Greeting visitors, providing interpretation at various locations on the site
• Operation of the point-of-sale system, providing general information at the visitor’s center
• Cleaning Parks Canada facilities as directed
ASSETS GROUP 1
Highway & General Maintenance (Group 1)
• Operation of small, motorised tools (weed whip, mowers)
• Garbage and Recycling collection throughout the park
• Supporting Highway Maintenance as needed in public areas (flagging, sign set up)
Janitorial (Group 1)
• Cleaning office and public buildings and restroom throughout the park
• Using gas powered pressure washer and required PPE
• Supporting other asset crews as needed with general maintenance
ASSETS GROUP 2
Trails Crew (Group 2)
• Experience hiking, and carrying heavy loads
• Experience with backcountry travel
• Experience working outdoors in all weather
• Chainsaw experience considered an asset
Grounds Crew (Group 2)
• Experience with basic landscaping
• Experience with landscaping tools (ride on mowers, push mowers, trimmers, weed whips, various non-motorised hand tools)
• Experience working outdoors in all weather
VISITOR EXPERIENCE - Janitorial
• Maintain park facilities: Clean washrooms, showers, outhouses, visitor center, and day-use areas; manage litter, garbage, recycling; restock supplies.
• Support visitors: Provide information and directions, assist with inquiries and compliance, and engage positively with guests.
• Assist operations: Support campgrounds, visitor center, entry gates, and traffic teams to ensure smooth operations and a high-quality visitor experience.
RESOURCE CONSERVATION - Vegetation Management:
• Work is team-based and focuses on reducing non-native invasive plants while supporting ecological monitoring and restoration.
• The role involves significant physical labour, including carrying equipment (e.g., backpack sprayers, scythes, whipper-snippers) and manually removing invasive plants.
• Strong plant identification skills are needed to distinguish invasive species from native ones.
• Attention to detail and basic computer skills are essential for recording control efforts and location data using ARC GIS/GPS tools.
• Students will learn to conduct vegetation surveys, follow native plant monitoring protocols, collect wild seeds, prepare sites, and assist with planting and other restoration tasks.
RESOURCE CONSERVATION - Ecological Integrity Monitoring:
• Requires extensive outdoor work in all weather and varied terrain (terrestrial and aquatic), including backcountry travel and a seasonally changing schedule; must be able to work safely both independently and in a team.
• Conducts Ecological Integrity Monitoring Program surveys, including amphibian surveys, early morning songbird surveys, and remote camera servicing.
• Assists with data and equipment management, including collecting data in the field and maintaining both paper and electronic records and databases.
• Asset skills include wildlife identification, experience with scientific equipment, off-trail and on-trail outdoor travel, strong attention to detail, and strong organizational skills.
