About the position

Duties
Both Streams:
Both fire crew member and fire crew leader are responsible for delivering wildland fuel management, prescribed fire and wildfire suppression services in support of the field units’ fire management program. More specifically duties related to each position are as follows:
GT-02 Fire Crew Member: As a fire crew member, you will report to the fire crew leader and be working within a team setting. The crew which you will be a vital part of is responsible for responding to wildfires, helping with implementing prescribed fires, completing wildfire risk reduction work and assisting with environmental monitoring. In addition to these duties, you may also assist other Resource Conservation departments with other monitoring projects. You will also be a part of the National Fire Management program and be required to respond and travel to various incidents across Canada.
GT-03 Fire Crew Leader: As a fire crew, you will support the fire management program by supervising a small fire crew. You will supervise and lead the crew while responding to wildfires, conducting prescribed fires, completing wildfire risk reduction work and assisting in environmental monitoring related to fire and/or fuel management. You will also be responsible for ensuring fire equipment is in a state of readiness and communicate any issues to your supervisor. As a fire crew leader, you will motivate and organize the crew on work assignments, resolve conflicts and assist with administrative duties such as time reporting, incident reporting and onboarding of new crew members. As part of the National Fire Management program, you will also lead crews on deployments to various locations across Canada as required. Some additional responsibilities may include assisting other Resource Conservation departments in monitoring programs, visitor safety and doing vegetation monitoring and management.

A qualifying list will be established and may be used to fill similar positions of various tenures (temporary, full-time, part-time).

• Obtain and maintain a valid class 4 driver’s license for RMNP and class 5 for PANP;
• Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks, including:
• Occupational Health Assessment for firefighters;
• Meet and maintain certified status for the Canadian Physical Performance Exchange Standard for Type 1 Wildland Fire Fighters (WFX-FIT) in accordance with Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC);
• Possession and maintenance of standard first aid and CPR

Operational Requirements

• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
• Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, adverse weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation;
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required;
• Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required;
• Willingness and ability to obtain and maintain chainsaw certifications;
• Willingness to meet and maintain certified status for hover exit for light and intermediate helicopters.

A secondary school diploma (high school) or acceptable combination of education, training, experience in a field related to the position.
Stream 2 (GT-03)
A secondary school diploma (high school) or acceptable combination of education, training, experience in a field related to the position AND completion of the CIFFC S131 Crew Member Course or equivalent.

• Experience working in remote areas for extended periods;

Stream 2 (GT-03)

• Experience working on the fireline;
• Experience in fire management operations related to fuel management, prescribed fire and/or fire suppression;

• Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), safe work practices and other related Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) issues;
Stream 2 (GT 03):

• Knowledge of fire management strategies and tactics for both wildland and prescribed fires.
