About the position

Duties
• Develop and Deliver Interpretive Programs:
Create and present engaging interpretive programs for diverse audiences, using a variety of techniques to share historical, cultural, and environmental stories, including themes related to heritage gardens.
• Visitor Experience and Service:
Respond to visitor inquiries and concerns with professionalism and tact. Promote a welcoming environment and ensure positive interactions.
• Program Planning and Evaluation:
Assess visitor needs and feedback to enhance program design and delivery. Recommend improvements to interpretive content and visitor experience initiatives.
• Team Leadership:
Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise seasonal staff, students, and volunteers. Provide coaching and ensure adherence to health and safety standards.
• Stakeholder Engagement:
Collaborate with partners, committees, educators, and community groups to develop inclusive and meaningful programming.
• Resource Stewardship:
Safeguard artifacts, interpretive materials, and garden assets. Ensure proper use and care of equipment.
• Administrative and Digital Tasks:
Utilize computer software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) for scheduling, reporting, and program development.
• Garden Interpretation and Maintenance Support:
Incorporate the historic gardens into visitor experiences through interpretive programming and ensure their presentation aligns with site standards.
Work environment
Located in the beautiful Kingston region, this historic site is nestled in an urban setting along the scenic St. Lawrence River, perfectly situated between Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa. The site offers enriching day-use experiences, featuring interpretation of complex and meaningful stories, the diverse voices of Confederation, and stunning historic grounds and gardens.
As part of our visitor services team, you will join a caring and collaborative group dedicated to creating memorable experiences for all guests. The successful candidate will demonstrate tact, empathy, and exceptional interpersonal skills to respond to inquiries from a wide range of visitors while working cooperatively with colleagues. We are seeking an engaged leader with a strong commitment to client service and interpretation, passionate about delivering inclusive and impactful visitor experiences.

Operational Requirements

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays
• Wear a Parks Canada uniform as per the uniform policy and/or dress in period costume as per Parks Canada requirements
• Work and/or travel in varied terrains, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation
• Travel for work and/or training purposes
• Stand/walk/hike for prolonged periods
• Perform certain physical tasks as per job requirements I.e. gardening, venue set up etc.

Your application must clearly explain how you meet the following
EDUCATION:
• Graduated from a recognized college or university with a degree or diploma. Preference will be given to those whose studies were in one of the following fields: recreation, tourism, history, environmental studies, cultural studies, or political science.

EXPERIENCE:
• Experience creating and delivering educational, cultural, or heritage programs for diverse audiences using varied presentation techniques.
• Experience collaborating with partners such as committees, associations, educators, school boards, communities, and Indigenous groups.
• Experience supervising, scheduling, training, and coaching seasonal staff and students.
• Experience with computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
***Candidates who have previously been successful in a PM-02 Interpretation Officer competition will automatically advance to the second phase of the selection process. These individuals are not required to complete the screening application questions. To confirm eligibility, applicants must either identify the specific PM-02 competition they were successful in through the Public Service Resourcing System (PSRS) or submit their resume via email, clearly indicating the competition and their successful status.
