About the position
Work environmentParks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and preservation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.
The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, within the Cape Breton Field Unit, is a large, reconstruction of an eighteenth-century French fortified town. Costumed animation is one aspect of the interpretive program at the Fortress.
The costume department, housed in one of the reconstructed buildings, consists of a sizeable stock of reproduction costume, that includes Indigenous, military and civilian costumes. The position, Curator II, Curator of Textiles, is responsible for managing all aspects of the reproduction costume program at the Fortress of Louisbourg.

Operational Requirements
Ability and willingness to adjust working hours on occasion
Willing and able to make moderate physical effort to sit and stand for prolonged periods
Lift and carry a minimum of 25lbs (approximately 9kg) over short distances
Able to use Microsoft Office suite.

Graduation from post-secondary studies (minimum of 2-year program) in a discipline relevant to the position, or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience

Experience in collections management, curatorial or conservation
Experience researching period costume.
Experience constructing clothing.
Experience in financial planning, budgeting, and reporting
Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team
Knowledge of costume history and material culture research.
Knowledge of clothing construction, fitting and alteration.
Knowledge of traditional hand and machine manufacturing techniques
Knowledge of textile fibres and fabric care.
Knowledge of heritage interpretation and curatorial best practices including effective use of period costume.
Ability to conduct specialized material culture research.
Ability to manage the selection, acquisition and evaluation of reproduction costume.
Ability to manage maintenance and tracking of a large stock of reproduction costume.
Ability to deliver specialized training, presentations and technical advice to Parks Canada staff and to external individuals/groups.
Ability to listen to others and communicate articulately to inform, influence and involve
Ability to work, supervise and coordinate activities in a multi-disciplinary environment
Ability to financially plan and budget
