About the position

Duties
The position provides emergency response for fires, spills, disasters, and accidents, as well as rescue operations. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing medical care, conducting equipment inspections and maintenance, and participating in public education activities when not responding to emergencies.
Work environment

The position works at a Base, Wing or Detachment and reports to a more senior Firefighter (FR) or military position. The technical subject matter knowledge for this position is gained through established occupational courses through a recognized/approved learning institution.
Additional courses for Base, Wing, or Detachment specific needs or re-certification of recognized industry certificates along with frequent refresher training are also required to maintain theoretical knowledge and practical skill levels.
Intent of the process
We are establishing a pool of qualified candidates for casual employment to support our short-term staffing needs. This initiative is designed to ensure operational continuity and efficiency meanwhile providing access to casual employees on an "as and when required" basis.
Casual employees may be called upon to:
• Fill temporary vacancies
• Cover staff absences
• Respond to urgent workload demands
Assignments will be offered based on organizational needs and candidate availability.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

- The candidate must possess a valid Class 3 Provincial Driver’s license from the province of Alberta with Air Brakes Endorsement
- Provide a copy of the provincial driving record (also know as Drivers abstract)
- Be able to obtain and maintain a DND 404 driver’s license for the duration employment
- Successful completion of the Federal Medical Evaluation
- Successful completion of the Firefighter Pre-Entry Fitness Evaluation (FPFE)
- Willing and able to travel for work and training purposes
- Must meet and maintain the medical requirements of Health Canada in accordance with Treasury Board guidelines
- Be willing and able to work atypical hours
- Be willing and able to:
• Respond to emergency calls within a maximum of 45 minutes time
• Work in confined spaces
• Work at heights
• Work in hostile demanding environments
• Work while wearing encumbered protective clothing and breathing apparatus
• Manipulate, handle and transport heavy tools and equipment (as per the FPFE requirements)
• Work additional hours when needed
• Participate in the departmental physical and wellness program
• Complete the Firefighter Initial training Program (FITP) as required in the FMD 1004
- Depending on the position being staffed, additional conditions of employment may be required.
Notes: Candidates must meet and maintain the above condition of employment throughout their employment in this position.

CERTIFICATIONS
- First Aid & CPR: Valid and endorsed certification from a recognized service provider in standard/basic first aid and “Level C” cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or higher.
AND
- Candidates shall meet one or more of the following fire service training prerequisites:
• NFPA 1001* Level II and NFPA 470**, Hazardous Materials / Weapons of Mass Destruction standard for Responders, Awareness and Ops level. (notes 1 and 2).
OR
•Diploma of professional studies in fire safety intervention (Quebec).
OR
•Pre-Fire Service Program (Ontario) AND NFPA 470 Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations level certification from an accredited training provider.
* NFPA study programs shall be successfully completed at an IFSAC or Pro board accredited entity.
** HAZMAT qualifications issued in accordance with NFPA 472 or 1072 are equivalent qualifications to NFPA 470 and are therefore acceptable alternatives.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION
- NFPA 1031 – Fire Inspector Level I
- NFPA 1033 – Fire Investigator Level I
- NFPA 1035 - Public Fire and Life Safety Educator Level I or Level I & II
- NFPA 1521 – Incident Safety Officer.
- Valid Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certificate

EXPERIENCES
AEX1. Experience in firefighting techniques and associated equipment
AEX2. Experience using the Incident Command Structure (ICS)

AEX5. Experience with Wildland Firefighting
AEX6. Experience in emergency response, such as volunteer firefighting, first aid response, or similar roles in crisis interventions
