About the position

Duties
The Grounds Supervisor oversees the maintenance and upkeep of Parks Canada’s outdoor landscaped spaces, ensuring safety, cleanliness, and environmental standards are met. They coordinate, conduct, and oversee front-country seasonal landscape maintenance activities, and manage/maintain equipment and supplies. The role includes supervising staff, monitoring grounds, day use areas, and facilities for maintenance, repairs, or improvements while adhering to accepted landscaping and horticultural practices and standards. They also enforce health and safety regulations and provide training to team members for efficient operations.
The Garden Supervisor manages the care and maintenance of Parks Canada’s gardens and horticultural services, ensuring they meet ecological and current industry standards. They plan, conduct, and oversee planting, pruning, mowing, turf and irrigation maintenance, and seasonal landscaping activities, using sustainable practices. The role includes supervising staff, coordinating schedules, and maintaining tools and equipment. They also monitor plant health, implement pest control measures, and ensure compliance with safety and environmental guidelines.
The Roads Maintenance Supervisor oversees the upkeep and repair of ditches, parking areas, and related roadside infrastructure within Parks Canada sites. They plan, conduct, and coordinate maintenance activities, including mowing/flail mowing, brushing, and gravel cleanup, ensuring safety and applicable standards are met. The role includes supervising staff, managing equipment and materials, and monitoring work quality and compliance with environmental guidelines.
APPLICABLE FOR ALL POSITIONS:
This is outdoor, physically demanding work. You will be expected to perform strenuous physical activity effectively and safely, to work and travel in varied terrain and weather conditions and provide and wear sturdy protective footwear suitable for hiking and working in a mountainous environment. All positions will plan, conduct, and oversee snow removal services in the Banff Field Unit, and will be required to work varied schedules, standby, and overtime.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: (Must be met prior to employment)
• Obtain and maintain a reliability security clearance;
• Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver’s License (Class 5);
• Required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks;
• Willing and able to wear identifier clothing and safety equipment and follow safety procedures.

Operational Requirements

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Willing and able to work weekends, shift work, statutory holidays and overtime, if required;
• Willing and able to travel in varied terrain and work in a variety of climatic and geographical conditions to various work sites;
• Willing and able to continually perform heavy physical tasks & lift up to 50 lbs.

EXPERIENCE IN:
Applicable to all 3 positions:
• Experience in planning & carrying out maintenance tasks in a team environment;
• Experience in labouring tasks including the use, operation and maintenance of a range of manual and power tools as well as light and heavy duty equipment;
• Experience in providing leadership, supervision and direction to work crews, and reviewing performance;
• Experience in integrated pest management & identifying native and non-native vegetation related to landscaping tasks;
• Experience in the use of computers and computer programs (Outlook, Word & Excel).
Applicable for Gardens and Grounds Supervisor position only:
• Experience in horticulture and in irrigation maintenance and turf management.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
• Knowledge of Parks Canada Agency;
• Knowledge of selecting and applying a range of general and semi-skilled repair, maintenance, construction, and installation methods, techniques and practices.

Asset Qualifications:
