Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to establish a pool of partially or fully qualified candidates to meet immediate and future needs, and it may be used to staff identical or similar positions at the Department of National Defence.

EDUCATION

UT-02 :
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in a field related to the duties of the position and competence in teaching and research.

UT-03 :
Graduation with a Doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in a field related to the duties of the position and competence in teaching and/or research

Notes:
1. The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.
2. For positions requiring a master’s or doctoral degree, the following alternatives may be accepted when combined with an acceptable bachelor’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution:
a. Research or scholarly studies constituting a significant contribution to the discipline; or
b. Professional practice recognized for its high quality.

When the educational qualifications are met through one of the alternatives described above, they are met for the position in question only.

EX1: Teaching experience at the university level: having taught university-level courses in at least three (3) of the following fields related to the duties of position:

a. Operational and policy planning processes within government or defence agencies or departments; operational art.
b. Logistics, sustainment and military support operations
c. Change management and organizational behavior
d. Theories and practices of leadership and negotiation
e. Defence economics, institutional management, military industrial production
f. Military or naval history, theories of war, conflict and strategy, relevant to the Canadian Armed Forces.
g. Alliances or coalition building.
h. Research methods
i. Offensive and defensive cyber operations and cyber security
j. Emerging Technologies and warfare
k. Information operations or hybrid warfare
l. Intelligence studies or Adversarial threat analysis
m. Space as a domain of conflict or space law
n. War gaming
o. Security and governance challenges and historical legacies of conflict in one or more of these areas:
↪ Asia-Pacific or Indo-Pacific
↪ Russia and Eurasia
↪ The Americas
↪ The Arctic or Circumpolar regions
p. Contemporary and transnational security challenges, e.g.

↪ Sub-state violence and civil conflict

EX2: Research experience at the university level in at least three (3) of the teaching fields related to the position listed above (see EX1).

EX3: Experience, including professional experience that would demonstrate evidence of significant scholarly merit* potential and evidence of service** with professional military education (PME) institution or with mature adult learners.

EX4: Experience supervising senior undergraduate theses or graduate level directed projects and papers.

▶ In addition to EX1-EX4, Associate Professor (UT03) positions require the following:

EX5: Experience that would demonstrate effective teaching at the graduate or professional level in the fields related to the position listed above (see EX1). As demonstrated through a teaching dossier or similar instrument.

EX6: Experience that would demonstrate independent scholarly merit* in minimum two (2) fields related to the position mentioned listed (see EX1).

EX7: Experience in academic administration; or otherwise demonstrate leadership experience or experience managing human resources.

* Scholarly merit is defined as publishing in referred journals or academic presses in the fields related to the position listed above (see EX1).

** Service is defined as for example, contribution to various committees or activities promoting the well-being of students as well as the success and development of an educational institution (particularly a small institution), participation in the organization of a conference, evaluation of scientific articles and other elements related to the academic community.

AEX4: Experience implementing innovative teaching methodologies.
AEX5: Experience with curriculum design and development in a professional team-based context (e.g. professional military education institution).
AEX6: Graduation from the CFC (Canadian Forces College) or an allied equivalent at either the Joint Command and Staff Program or National Security Program.
