Duties

Based at Parks Canada Inuvik, NWT office, you will work with a small team of technicians and biologists within the Resource Conservation team. Your summers will be busy with field work, participating in multi-day fields to the three remote fly-in national parks in the region. Team members share responsibilities for planning and leading these trips. For the balance of the year your work will involve organizing logistics for the next field season, completing necessary training as well as compiling, reviewing and analyzing monitoring results from the summer field season. Our monitoring programs include both terrestrial (e.g. breeding birds, raptor & lemming abundance), and aquatic (e.g. benthic invertebrates, water quality, river discharge) measures. You will serve as the functional lead for one or more of these measures. You will participate in our Duty Officer program and will occasionally be asked to assist with emergency responses. You will have the option to be trained as a wildland firefighter. You will occasionally serve as a bear guard to support field work and will be comfortable in the handling and use of long arms.

Due to the field work required for this position, and the responsibility to actively supervise staff, this position is located in Invuik and requires an in-person presence.

EDUCATION
- An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience relevant to the position OR a secondary school diploma.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
- Experience in multiday travelling or working in remote outdoor environments (e.g., Overnight travel on the land in the western Arctic or working in remote field camps);
- Experience leading field work (preferably scientific field work);
- Experience using a variety of computer applications for data entry, data management, and report writing.

ASSET EDUCATION
Graduation with a degree from a recognized university with specialization in environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g. biology, ecology, geology) or other discipline relevant to the position, or an acceptable combination of two years of a post-secondary program related to environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g. biology, ecology, geology), training and experience in a field related to the position.

Degree equivalency

ASSET EXPERIENCE
- Experience working effectively with Indigenous communities or Northern communities;
- Experience providing emergency response (e.g., such as responding to wildlife incidents, wilderness first aid, search and rescue, incident response, etc);
- Experience in handling and using firearms, including holding a valid Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) certificate;
- Experience using various modes of transportation for travelling in remote locations. (e.g., Non-motorized and motorized boat, ATV, Snowmobile, etc);
- Experience leading two (2) or more phases of field research projects; (design, logistics, synthesis of background information, definition of data/sample collection requirements, data/sample analysis, presentation of results);
- Experience preparing technical/scientific reports, manuscripts drafts, protocols, presentations, web site information, public presentation or displays.

ASSET ABILITIES
- Ability to follow appropriate protocols for data/sample collection and compilation;
- Ability to conduct analysis and monitor spatial and non-spatial data using various automated software and applications;
- Ability to manage and conduct data manipulation in consultation with scientists.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Willingness and ability to perform physical labour and lift up to 50 lbs;
- Willingness and ability to hike long distances including multi-day hikes;
- Willingness to complete training provided by Parks Canada;
- Willingness to fly in and work closely with both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters;
- Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain and weather conditions;
- Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
- Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required;
- Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required;
- Willingness to support and participate in emergency response activities initiated by Parks Canada.

Conditions of employment

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOMENT
- Obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance;
- Possession of a valid class 5 driver’s licence;
- Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks;
- Attain and maintain Wilderness First Aid certification;
- Successful completion of the Canadian Firearm Safety course, with a valid Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL).
