Duties

The Railway Signal Systems Inspector provides oversight of the Federally-Regulated Railway's signal systems, which includes active warning systems for railway crossings and railway wayside signal systems. They ensure that the railway company is meeting the requirements of the Railway Safety Act, Grade Crossing Regulations, and Grade Crossing Standards. This is accomplished through on-site inspections of the railway locations with responsible railway personnel present. Scheduling of inspections and travel planning is the responsibility of the inspector, and the expectation is that they will complete all of the planned inspections within the fiscal year. This allows for some flexibility on travel within the different seasons of the year (spring, summer, fall, winter). Generally, the bulk of inspections are conducted in the summer and fall months, and the winter and spring are reserved for meetings and the planning of future inspections. With this in mind, travel can vary from approximately 25-50% of the inspector’s schedule.
