Duties

This position reports to a senior technician and must be able to work outside in the summer and to work extended hours during certain parts of the year. The individual will participate in seeding, plot maintenance, harvest, cleaning of grain, packaging of seed for analysis and seed set up for planting. This job requires the ability to operate equipment and work outside in varying weather conditions. This site conducts irrigation work and there is some involvement in using this equipment. Travel is limited. There is exposure to dust pollen and noise and the incumbent must to be able to do this work which may require the use of personal protective equipment. The successful candidate must be able lift and carry samples and participate in a range of activities supporting wheat or oat genetic enhancement.

Brandon Research and Development Centre supports innovative research, development, technology and knowledge transfer activities related to the following AAFC Science Sector Strategies, Agro-Ecosystem Resilience, Cereals and Pulses / Oilseeds and Horticulture focusing on developing new and improved varieties of wheat, oats and barley, sustainable and profitable crop production systems, and agro-ecosystems.

Intent of the process

Anticipatory need: 2 full-time temporary positions (duration of up to 18 months) and 1 full-time permanent position.

A pool of qualified or partially qualified candidates may be established and used to fill similar positions on a temporary or permanent basis.

Education:
Successful completion of secondary school diploma OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience in the operation of plot scale (e.g. harvesters, seeders, sprayers) or farm equipment (e.g. tractors, combine, farm trucks).
Experience working with field crops and weed species.
Experience in processing seed (e.g. cleaning, conducting quality testing) or soil (e.g. collecting, conducting soil analysis) samples.

Asset Experience:
Experience in working in an agricultural research environment.
Significant experience* in the operation of plot scale or farm equipment.
*"Significant experience" is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with having performed these activities over a combined period of at least 50 hours of operating time.

Asset Certifications:
Pesticide Applicator’s License issued by Manitoba for field application or greenhouse application.
Forklift Operator’s License issued by a provincially certified agency.

Asset Knowledge:
Knowledge of modern greenhouse practices, plant maintenance and growing conditions in a controlled environment.

Reliability Status security clearance

Possession of a valid class 5 Manitoba driver’s license, or other provincial/territorial equivalency.
Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust and noise).
Ability and willingness to work overtime including evening, weekends and statutory holidays with adequate advance notice.
Ability and willingness to work with chemicals and pesticides.
Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 25kg).
Ability and willingness to control allergies, through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and must not impinge on tasks to be performed.
Ability and willingness to complete the Agriculture Ground Pesticide Certification within eighteen months of appointment.
Ability and willingness to obtain a Forklift Operator’s License issued by a provincially certified agency within one year of appointment.
Ability and willingness to obtain a Class 3 Manitoba driver’s license within one year of appointment.
