Duties

Working in the Rail Safety Directorate at Transport Canada, Regional Railway Inspectors are responsible for monitoring railways to promote compliance with acts and regulations as well as working with railways in identifying and reducing risks.

What you will be doing:
☑ Conducting inspections and audits of railway facilities and operations within the region, and recommending compliance and/or enforcement actions as required;
☑ Providing technical advice and guidance to stakeholders in the railway industry;
☑ Applying expertise in investigations of accidents, incidents, injuries and fatalities, complaints and other situations as it relate to acts and regulations; and
☑ Participating in the planning and implementation of the regional inspection and monitoring program.

Work environment

The reporting locations for this position are 101 - 22nd Street E, Room 305 in Saskatoon; 800 - 1601 Airport Road NE in Calgary, and 1100 - 9700 Jasper Avenue in Edmonton. The successful candidate will follow Transport Canada's hybrid work guidance for inspectors working in the field to ensure compliance with the work arrangement agreement and onsite presence requirement minimums for this position are consistent with those defined in the Treasury Board's Direction on prescribed presence in the workplace.

Travel is required, both locally and regionally, and occasionally nationally, for inspection and training activities. Duties will be performed in an office environment as well as various indoor and outdoor environments such as railway sites or yards and under varying weather conditions.

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified or partially qualified candidates may be established to staff identical or similar positions with various linguistic profiles, tenures, and locations within Transport Canada.

*Significant experience is defined as having performed a broad range of various and complex activities normally acquired over a period of at least five (5) years.

Reliability Status security clearance

Required to pass a pre-employment Category III medical for Transportation Security Inspectors and pass a periodic Category II medical every 5 years.
