Duties

Who are we and what do we do?

"O" Division Digital Forensics Services (DFS) is a support unit composed of regular members (police officers) and public service employees. Both groups of employees bring their unique experiences in policing and information technology which are assets when conducting digital forensic examinations. All members of the DFS have strong IT backgrounds and are continually upgrading their skills to stay on top of the ever-changing world of technology.

What will you be doing?

As a Digital Evidence Specialist with the DFS section, you will primarily
- Participate in operational policing activities such as search warrants, digital forensic acquisitions and examinations as a designated peace officer or in the accompaniment of a police officer
- Examine electronic devices and technology such as but not limited to personal computers, mobile devices, networking devices, gaming consoles, drones, vehicles, data storage devices and other emerging technologies
- Plan, implement, maintain, test, integrate and apply specialized digital forensic tools and techniques to provide highly specialized technical services related to digital forensic examinations for investigating teams
- Prepare technical analysis reports for investigations
- Provide testimony in court which may include expert testimony

As a new examiner, you will undergo the Technological Crime Understudy Program (TCUP), which will give you the skills and knowledge to conduct digital forensic investigations as a subject matter expert. You will participate in field work such as the execution of search warrants and specialized operations. The work schedule is generally routine however can vary based on operational needs. Intent of the process

The intent of the selection process is to staff one (1) indeterminate English Essential position with a RCMP ERS with Top Secret security clearance. The position is located at 155 McArthur Avenue, Ottawa, ON.

This selection process could also be used to staff similar positions of varying tenures within the Central Region, RCMP.

Should a Civilian Member (CM) be found qualified and selected for appointment, the appointment will not result in a change of status to the Public Service (PS) category for the CM. Information regarding the CM appointment will be sent to all applicable candidates who are within the area of selection and participated in the advertised process.

Graduation from a two-year program of study from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in computer science, information technology, information management or another specialty relevant to the position to be staffed (i.e. cybersecurity, digital forensics).

Degree equivalency

Experience in installing, configuring, and maintaining hardware, software, computers, and tools.

Experience in the use, functionality, and deployment of digital forensics, incident response, eDiscovery or ethical hacking tools.

Experience in writing software tools in programming and/or scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, Java, and C#.

Experience with virtualization products such as Oracle VirtualBox, VMWare Workstation, Docker, and Proxmox VE.

• Knowledge of technology concepts regarding the fundamental implementation of protocols, networking, data storage, communication methodology or operating systems.
• Knowledge installing, configuring, and maintaining Windows or Linux servers on virtualized or physical infrastructures.
• Knowledge in structured query language (SQL) and querying databases such as SQLite, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server.
• Knowledge of configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting computer hardware and peripherals.

Canadian Police College course(s) such as Computer Forensic Examiner (CMPFOR), Internet Evidence Analysis (IEAC), Network Investigative Techniques (NITC), and Mobile Device Acquisition and Analysis (MDAA).

Degree equivalency

Digital forensics related certification(s) such as GIAC Certified Forensic Examiner (GCFE), GIAC Certified Forensic Analyst (GCFA), Magnet Certified Forensic Examiner (MCFE), and IACIS Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE).

Network security/penetration testing related certification(s) such as Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP), Offensive Security Wireless Professional (OSWP), Offensive Security Certified Expert (OSCE), GIAC Security Essentials Certification (GSEC), and CompTIA A+/Network+/Security+/Cybersecurity Analyst+.

Experience in digital forensics as described below:
• Experience in the acquisition and examination of electronic devices and technology such as but not limited to personal computers, mobile devices, networking devices, gaming consoles, data storage devices, embedded systems, and other emerging technologies.
• Experience in overseeing/managing the security, safeguarding, handling and control of exhibits, evidence and police reports.
• Experience in preparing formal examination and analysis reports for investigations and creating disclosure packages for court prosecutions.
• Experience in programming and scripting in order to automate processing and to provide solutions when other forensic tools or techniques are unsupported.

Knowledge of case law, Criminal Code, and judicial authorizations relevant to digital forensics.

Willingness and ability to complete the 2-year Technological Crime Understudy Program (TCUP).

Conditions of employment
