You’ll be working for Wood Buffalo National Park, which is the largest national park in Canada, the world’s largest dark-sky preserve, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is a cultural landscape for Cree, Dene, and Métis peoples of the region. The park works with eleven Indigenous communities, who continue to use the land for activities like hunting, trapping, fishing, and medicinal plant and berry picking. The 260 kilometers of gravel roads and 115 kilometers of chip sealed highway in the park provide access to these traditional activities and form an important part of this cultural landscape. Most of these roads are the sole access routes to communities inside and around the park, the largest being Fort Smith, a community of 2,500 people.
Starting in September 2024, the operation and maintenance of these roads is being executed by a third-party under a performance-based contract. In this exciting new position, you will help shape the execution of this contract and develop the systems and processes that will ensure success for all parties. With oversight and support from the Field Unit Asset Manager, you will have the autonomy to prioritise your day-to-day work. You will have the responsibility for reviewing and approving of the road management plans, monitoring the execution of contract work in the field, financial management of the contract, and supporting the continuous improvement of the contract execution.
Working closely with others in the Asset and Project management teams, you will also support the capital work program for the road network in Wood Buffalo, as well as the annual construction of the Winter Road to the community of Fort Chipewyan, AB. From time to time, you may have the opportunity to work on projects in the field unit’s other 3 national parks (Nahanni, Thaidene Nene, and Naats’ihch’oh).
This is a place of opportunity – to learn new skills, to try things you’ve maybe never done before, and to experience surreal landscapes.
You’ll be based in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, a welcoming community of 2,500 people. Fort Smith is in Treaty 8 territory and the traditional territory of the Indigenous peoples of Salt River First Nation, Smith's Landing First Nation, and the Northwest Territory Métis Nation.
The park attracts local, national, and international visitors who wish to experience and learn about the unique cultures, landscapes, and wildlife of the boreal region. Canada’s north is known for its friendly and welcoming residents, and the Wood Buffalo region is no exception.
It is a beautiful part of Canada with a plenty of cultural and outdoor activities to chose from. Along with good options for many of the common outdoor activities, the region has world-class white-water paddling and birding opportunities.
In this role, your work week will be healthy mix of in the office and out in the park. Here you’re sure to enjoy the camaraderie that comes from working closely with colleagues.
There are significant opportunities for collaboration between functions and lots of things to learn from co-workers whose work differs greatly from yours. There are many chances and possibilities for career growth within Parks Canada, and that will extend to you in this role.
The Fort Smith office is welcoming and supportive, staff work hard together and know how to have fun. We welcome you to be part of our fantastic team!
