Duties

Are you someone who can provide strong leadership to a team of dedicated and passionate individuals? Are you passionate about connecting visitors to our natural and cultural heritage?

If yes, then this might be the job for you!

In this position, you will provide leadership to a trail crew. You will supervise and coordinate semi-skilled and general labour maintenance and repair work, train staff, and provide leadership in workplace health, wellness and safety. You will perform administrative and planning tasks including scheduling, work plans, and small-to-medium sized projects.

The successful candidate will balance administrative duties with working in the backcountry for extended periods between late spring and early fall in close quarters with the rest of the team.

The Yukon Field Unit is one of the most diverse field units across the country.

Geographically dispersed over 1200km across the Yukon, northern BC, and into Alaska, we offer a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors and staff. Our sites offer diverse and varied opportunities to explore Yukon's beautiful landscape - from the glorious SS Klondike National Historic Site in Whitehorse, to the fabled Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site, to Canada's largest ice field and extreme peaks in Kluane National Park and Reserve, extending to the colourful Klondike National Historic Sites in Dawson, to Vuntut National Park located above the Arctic Circle.

EDUCATION
► Successful completion of secondary school, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
► Experience in supervising staff and leading diverse teams (hiring, scheduling, work planning, occupational health and safety, and performance management);
► Experience planning, coordinating and managing seasonal workplans;
► Experience organizing, preparing and conducting semi-skilled and general maintenance and repair to maintain facilities, structures and equipment;
► Experience or training in visitor safety operations (e.g. Wilderness Advanced First Aid, Avalanche Safety Training, bear safety, firearms safety, incident response, firefighting, search and rescue);
► Experience living and/or working in outdoor field conditions (i.e., travelling on the land, field/backcountry/trip guiding).

KNOWLEDGE
► Knowledge of the natural and cultural history of the Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site;
► Knowledge of safe practices in the use and maintenance of hand and power tools both portable and stationary;
► General construction knowledge in the maintenance and repair of building structures;
► Knowledge in conducting and reporting on asset inspections and inventories;
► Knowledge in working and travelling in a remote backcountry setting for extended periods.

ABILITIES
► Ability to identify hazardous or potentially hazardous situations and take appropriate action to maintain a safe environment;
► Ability to lead with integrity and inclusion while helping others achieve excellent results;
► Ability to develop, implement, evaluate and adjust plans and logistics, and manage resources (time, financial, human, physical and information) to achieve planned goals;
► Ability to support incident response in a remote backcountry setting;
► Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of colleagues within the organization and with external organizations.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE
► Experience working in and delivering services to a northern and/or isolated community;
► Experience planning, developing, implementing and monitoring programs, activities, operations, services or facilities related to visitor experience.

Conditions of employment

► Reliability Status security clearance;
► Possess and maintain a valid Yukon class 5 driver's license or equivalent;
► Successfully pass and maintain pre-employment Occupational Health Assessment and periodic medical checks

OPERATIONAL REQUIRMENTS
► Work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation;
► Wear a Parks Canada uniform;
► Hike long distances including multi-day hikes
► Work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required;
► Work and/or travel off roads and paths, with limited communication and emergency response capacity, in various meteorological and environmental conditions (e.g., cold, hot, rain, biting insects, noxious weeds, uneven terrain);
► Obtain and maintain certification in the following:
⬜ Wilderness First Responder (80hr, optimal) or Wilderness Advanced First Aid (40hr) certificate;
⬜ Avalanche Safety Training Level 1 or 2 (optimal) certificate;
⬜ Small Vessel Operator Proficiency certificate.
