NRCan has transitioned to a hybrid work environment which offers employees the opportunity to telework and work from the designated work location, subject to operational requirements. This position will require an in-office presence for a minimum of three (3) days a week.

Duties

This Physical Scientist position assists with and conducts technical activities and scientific research in the fields of terrestrial and marine seismology, including field and/or laboratory work, application, and/or development of mathematical and computational tools for processing and interpreting predominantly passive seismic datasets, in addition to more general geophysical data.

The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) is part of Natural Resources Canada’s Lands and Minerals Sector (LMS). It is a national organization for geoscientific information and research. Its world-class expertise focuses on the sustainable development of Canada’s mineral, energy and water resources; stewardship of Canada’s environment; management of natural geological and related hazards; and technology innovation. Office space and computing facilities will be provided at Pacific Geoscience Centre, which is the Sidney, BC, office of the Pacific Division of the Geological Survey of Canada.

Intent of the process

The intent is to staff one (1) position at the PC-02 group and level, as one of Acting, Assignment, Deployment, Indeterminate, Secondment, or Specified Period. The position is located at 9860 West Saanich Road, Sidney, British Columbia.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar PC-02 positions at Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential and Bilingual Imperative or Non-Imperative) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC,CCC/CCC, etc.), locations and conditions of employment.

Essential Education:
• Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.

Note:
The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

Essential Experience:
• Experience in independently conducting assigned projects (i.e., project management).
• Experience managing geoscience data.
• Experience in dealing with seismic datasets, including processing, quality control, or data archiving.
• Experience with seismological instrumentation, including planning a deployment, carrying out the deployment, or recovering the equipment.
• Experience in writing scientific reports or articles.
• Experience in use of computer programs for time series analysis, seismic imaging, or earthquake detection and location.

• Knowledge of geophysical instrumentation (seismic).
• Knowledge of geoscience data modeling, data analysis or quality control methods.
• Knowledge of the processing and analysis of passive seismic data.
• Knowledge of software packages and scripting languages used for seismic data analysis and visualisation.
• Knowledge of Linux-based computer systems.

• Ability to assess requirements, advise and coordinate seismological fieldwork
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• Willing and able to participate in fieldwork activities outside the office (for durations up to 4 weeks).
• A pre-appointment medical clearance in accordance with Treasury Board Occupational Health Evaluation Standards for field work.
