Duties

This research-focused position involves programming and data management assistance to support wireless sensor networks for smart farming and greenhouse gas modeling applications.

The student will be required to:
- Oversee integration of wireless sensors into data monitoring and collection systems based on Internet of Things (IoT) networking protocols
-Establish data transfer and quality control procedures for collected datasets.
-Manage data analysis of soil moisture and meteorological data
-Participate in field work to support installation and maintenance of sensors.

Work environment

The agrometeorology team at the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre (LeRDC) is exploring the potential of internet of things (IoT) sensor networks as a tool to support climate-smart agricultural solutions. Our current project seeks to develop best practices for use and evaluation of wireless low-cost sensor networks for agriculture.
This position will be lab and office based with occasional field work to support field sensors and equipment in Lethbridge AB, Brandon MB and Ottawa ON.

Education:
Candidate must be enrolled now, or will be enrolled by the date of the appointment, in a master's program at a recognized postsecondary institution with a specialization in:
• Computer Science related discipline
• Or Agricultural Engineering
• Or Environmental Science related discipline

Note: Must be currently recognized as having full-time student status in the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled, pending approval of acceptance or in the process of submitting your application. Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start date and the student must be returning to full-time studies for your next academic term.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience in electronics and/or environmental and meteorological sensors.
Experience with data management and data analysis.
Experience with programming and coding.

Note: In the context of student recruitment in the federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through studies, work experience or volunteer activities.
