Duties

Delivers interpretive presentations, programs and activities to provide visitors of the park, historic site or marine conservation area with opportunities to discover, appreciate, learn about and enjoy the place and its natural and/or cultural resources and understand their significance to Canada.

Work environment

L’Anse aux Meadows NHS is a 10th century Viking site and the only one known in North America. Located on the furthermost northern point on the island on Newfoundland L’Anse aux Meadows attracts about 38,000 visitors from both North America and internationally each season. The site is known for its guided tours of the archaeological ruins as well as its living history program which portrays life in a remote Viking base camp. The regions population of about 3,500 is dispersed among numerous small communities with St. Anthony being the regional hub. The region offers medical and banking services, various restaurants, coffee shops and many opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast to explore and enjoy nature.

Intent of the process

The results of this process will be used to fill 2 positions in L’Anse aux Meadows, NL.

This process will also be used to create a list of qualified candidates for other opportunities that may arise at the GT-01 level in the Western Newfoundland & Labrador Field Unit, in various locations, with full or part-time hours for various tenures, such as: Indeterminate, Term, Acting Assignment or Assignment at level, depending on status of the selected candidate.

Education
A High School diploma or equivalent or a minimum of three (3) months experience working in the fields of education, interpretation, and/or outreach-communications.

Degree equivalency

Experience
• Experience in delivering messages and information to groups for the purpose of education, engagement, or entertainment.
• Experience in interacting with the public in a reception, orientation and/or interpretation capacity.

Knowledge
• Knowledge of communication, presentation and/or interpretive techniques such as storytelling, hands-on demonstrations, roving interpretation and guided walks.

• Communication through Interpretation - Delivering presentations using effective communication techniques. Actively engaging visitors in conversations with an education purpose. Engaging and entertaining an audience while communicating heritage values and messages.
• Adaptability - Adapting in order to work effectively in ambiguous or changing situations, and with diverse individuals and groups.
• Client Focus - Responding to client needs in a professional, helpful, and courteous manner, regardless of client attitude. Looking for ways to add value.
• Teamwork – Doing one's own fair share of the work. Assisting other team members. Dealing with conflict in a constructive manner within the team. Contributing to team spirit.

Additional Experience
• Experience in theatre / performing arts, heritage interpretation, education, storytelling or musical performance.

Additional Knowledge:
• General knowledge of the ecology, geology, and cultural heritage of L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site.

Operational Requirements
• Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrains, weather conditions, isolated locations.
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required.
• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform or historical costume when required.

Conditions of employment

• Obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance.
• As the position is located in an area classed as isolated and remote, a pre-employment medical examination of an individual and his/her dependents may be required.
