NRCan has transitioned to a hybrid work environment which offers employees the opportunity to telework and work from the designated work location, subject to operational requirements. This position will require an in-office presence for a minimum of three (3) days a week.
Are you passionate about the geosciences? Would you like to work with scientists with a wide range of expertise to help Canada in geosciences? If so, the position of Geoscience Technologist, specialist at the Quebec Division of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) could be for you.
The GSC is looking for a motivated individual for a technologist position with several responsibilities. The successful candidate will have a variety of tasks that vary over time (within the same year and from year to year), in support of GSC researchers. These include, but are not limited to:
- Data management and entry into a standardized database;
- Sample and storage site management;
- Realizing graph and preliminary data processing;
- Map creation in ArcGIS (or other GIS software);
- Maintenance of various equipment/instruments;
- Planning, supervising, and/or carrying out field work, which can last from a few days to a few weeks, in sometimes remote locations. Such work may include:
► Drilling supervision
► Description of unconsolidated sediment and/or rock cores
► Hydraulic testing (pumping and/or permeability tests)
► Sampling of surface water, groundwater in wells, soil, rock and air.
The approximate time breakdown is as follows
50% of the time in the field/lab (including equipment management and maintenance);
30% of the time managing geoscientific samples and storage space;
20% of the time using computer for data management and preliminary analysis.
For this position, the GSC is looking for a candidate who understands the importance of data and samples as the foundation of any research project. Qualities required include conscientiousness, organizational skills, self-reliance, adaptability and the ability to keep calm and cheerful, as research projects usually involve something new, and therefore sometimes a lot of trial and error.
