Duties

The candidate will apply quantitative, geospatial, and modelling expertise to support the primary research objectives within the carbon accounting and fire research group. This will involve collecting, processing and analyzing data related to fire disturbance dynamics; developing, adapting, and running the simulation models of fire impacts on forests; presenting results in scientific journals and internal reports; responding to internal and external requests/enquiries from clients and other researchers regarding fire-carbon interactions.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff one (1) position located in Edmonton, Alberta. A pool of qualified candidates may be established to staff identical or similar positions with various tenures and conditions of employment.

Education
• Graduation with an advanced degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in renewable resources, forestry, ecology, environmental science, or some other science relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience
· Running and modifying process-based carbon cycle models and/or fire models and interpreting their outputs
· Compiling, synthesizing and analyzing carbon stocks and fluxes from diverse sources
· Using a scripting language (R, Python, etc)
· Writing reports and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
· Communicating research findings to diverse audiences
· Processing spatial datasets

Knowledge of the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System (CFFDRS) and it’s subcomponents

The work requires long periods of sustained attention to a computer screen
