Duties

As a member of our Asset team, our Parks Canada Maintenance Workers duties could include grass cutting, installing signage, preparing fire wood, repairing and maintaining trails, general facility maintenance or supporting other trades.

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

PEI National Park of Canada is home to sand dunes, barrier islands and sandspits, beaches, sandstone cliffs, wetlands and forests. These diverse habitats provide a home for a variety of plants and animals, including the threatened Gulf of Saint Lawrence Aster and the endangered Piping Plover. The National Park also features unique cultural resources, notably Green Gables, part of L. M. Montgomery's Cavendish National Historic Site, and Dalvay-by-the-Sea National Historic Site.

EDUCATION
Secondary school diploma (Gr12) or Provincial equivalent.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
• Experience in performing general labour tasks.
• Experience operating small equipment. (Ex. ride on lawnmower, tamper, etc.)
• Experience operating small power tools. (Ex cordless drills, circular saw, gas powered generator, etc.)
• Experience using Microsoft Office. Ex. Word or Excel

KNOWLEDGE
• Knowledge performing general labour tasks
• Knowledge of work place safety and safe work practises.
(This could include knowledge of proper Personal Protective Equipment, safety codes and standards).
• Knowledge of the proper use, care and maintenance of tools used in labour related work.

• Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and visitors.
• Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE
• Experience working in PEI National Parks and/or Historic Sites.
• Experience operating equipment such as a small utility vehicles, utility tractor, etc.
• Experience in safe and efficient use or a chainsaw for cutting, felling, limbing and topping.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform
• Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions.
• Willingness to take mandatory training related to the job as required
• Required to physically perform strenuous work and walk extended distances while carrying a load up to 50 lbs.
