Duties

The incumbent, under the direction of the Coordinating Biologist, will manage both surrounding field areas as well as the field operations of non-plot land. This includes fence-line, tree line, road and pathway maintenance, field preparation, soil sampling, seeding, application of fertilizers, employing various modes of pest control (e.g. pesticide applications, tillage, rogueing, among others), crop harvest, and crop residue management. The incumbent will also manage the storage and marketing of harvested field crops and hay land.

It will be necessary for the incumbent to operate, adjust and service a variety of farm equipment and tools; participate in the maintenance of experimental plots; maintain records on land use and farm operations including dates of field activities, along with seed, fertilizer, and pesticide rates and applications; ensure applications of field treatments (pesticides, fertilizers, etc.) comply with current guidelines and regulations; maintain and compile accounts, records and inventories, prepare purchase requisitions, and determine and coordinate the ordering of materials and supplies (e.g. seed, fertilizer and pesticides, equipment, filters and lubricants, and tools; plan and coordinate layout of non-plot fields and crop rotation based on needs of experimental plots; coordinate service and setup of field equipment; inspect all farm machinery to ensure operational condition and cleanliness; coordinate equipment repairs; establish and maintain safety protocols and standard operating practices and make arrangements for health and safety training of staff; explain work procedures, set schedules and/or assign tasks to casual workers and summer students.

Work environment

As one of a number of agricultural research sites located in Canada, this Supervisor Specialized Operations Work/Field Work position is located at the Beaverlodge Research Farm, in northern Alberta. The Beaverlodge site is responsible for agronomic research, cereal and oilseed breeding, forage crop research, apiculture, soil health research, and integrated pest management.

• Secondary school diploma or acceptable combination of education, training, and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

• Experience planning and coordinating field operations.
• Experience in the operation and maintenance of modern agricultural farm machinery or field research equipment (e.g. tractors, seeders, sprayers, harvesters, farm trucks and trailers).

• Diploma or degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in an area of study related to agriculture research.

Degree equivalency

• Possession of a valid Alberta Agricultural Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate.

• Experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, and Powerpoint.
• Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

• Possession of a valid class 5 Alberta driver’s license or other provincial/territorial equivalency.
• Possession of a valid Alberta Agricultural Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate or ability and willingness to obtain it within 6 months of appointment.
