Rouge National Urban Park Resource Conservation Highlights:
• Since 2015, Parks Canada has initiated and completed 137 ecological restoration and farmland enhancement projects throughout RNUP.
• Working in collaboration with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Indigenous partners, farmers, municipalities, schools and volunteers, Parks Canada has restored more than 91 hectares of wetland, and more than 142 hectares of forest habitat.
• In collaboration with our partners, more than 286,700 native trees, perennials, shrubs and aquatic plants have been planted throughout the park. Parks Canada will continue working with our partners throughout the park to improve conditions in wetlands, meadows, forests, streams and rivers, resulting in greater native biodiversity and better conditions for aquatic species.
• Parks Canada and the Toronto Zoo have released 730 two-year old Blanding’s turtles and 300 newly hatched Blanding’s turtles into Rouge National Urban Park.
• Rouge National Urban Park also works collaboratively with environmental agencies, leaseholders, municipalities, academia and volunteers to remove and/or manage invasive plant species, including Japanese Knotweed, Phragmites australis and Dog Strangling Vine.
Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and preservation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.
A rich assembly of natural, cultural and agricultural landscapes, Rouge National Urban Park is home to amazing biodiversity, some of the last remaining working farms in the Greater Toronto Area, Carolinian ecosystems, amazing hiking opportunities, and human history dating back over 10,000 years, including some of Canada's oldest known Indigenous sites.
Rouge National Urban Park is one of the largest and best protected urban parks of its kind in the world, spanning 79.1 square kilometres in the heart of Canada's largest and most diverse metropolitan area, overlapping the cities of Toronto, Markham and Pickering and the townships of Uxbridge and Whitchurch-Stouffville.
