Duties

The PC-02 physical chemist will be working on federal government funded research projects, and potentially client research projects, related to the environmental impacts of natural resource development. The PC-02 will be responsible for conducting laboratory or pilot-scale experiments which includes, designing the experiments, gathering, analyzing, and processing data related to water or hydrocarbon chemistry. They will analyze and modify research methods, making recommendations for improvements as necessary. Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for ordering necessary supplies and basic equipment for laboratory testing. They must also demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively within a research team.

The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of the general physical and chemical properties of environmental contaminants in water and sediments, including petroleum fuels, biofuels, and/or plastics. Proficiency in word-processing and spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Word and Excel is essential. The candidate must also be well-versed in laboratory procedures and housekeeping to maintain high standards of lab safety.

Work environment

CanmetENERGY Devon research centre is located within a 20-minute drive from south Edmonton. Although there is no public transit available to the research centre, parking is free.

This is a hybrid position which requires a minimum of three days per week in the workplace, as mandated by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's guidelines on prescribed workplace presence.

The successful candidate can expect to work with research scientists, technologists, chemists and engineers and will contribute to scientific publications related to contaminant transport studies undertaken.

Education
Graduation with a Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in chemistry, engineering, or some other science relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience
Experience with designing and conducting laboratory or pilot scale experiments, data gathering, analyzing and processing in the technical fields of water or hydrocarbon chemistry.

Experience in analyses, modification or making suggestions as necessary to improve research methods.

Experience ordering supplies and basic equipment as required for laboratory testing.

Experience working within a research team.

Experience using an autoclave in a pilot plant.

Experience with hydrocarbon extraction from water samples.
