The intent of this process is to staff three (3) positions. Working in the Rail Safety and Security Directorate at Transport Canada, Railway Engineers are responsible for monitoring railways to promote compliance with acts and regulations as well as working with railways and Transport Canada railway inspectors in identifying and reducing risks.

What you will be doing:
Transport Canada directly contributes to the safety and security of Canadians on a daily basis. Rail Safety and Security is responsible for strengthening the regulatory framework and overseeing the administration of regulations to support the safe and secure conduct of all railway activities under the federal umbrella. As part of the Railway Engineering team of Rail Safety and Security in Head Quarters-Ottawa, you will work with Engineers involved in every aspect of rail transportation, including the equipment, infrastructure, and any new innovative Engineering fields on the horizon. As a Rail Safety and Security team member, you will interface with key stakeholders including, Transportation Practitioners, members of the Transportation Association of Canada, the Institute of Transportation Engineers, railway industry leaders like Canadian Pacific Railway (CP), Canadian National Railway (CN), VIA Rail and our engage with our American counterpart, The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
As a Rail Safety and Security engineer you will play a direct role in advancing safety on the rail transportation system in Canada and will work first hand on engineering recommendations and technical advisory material that creates the basis upon which rail safety is improved. As a Rail Safety and Security Engineer in the Ottawa office, you will play an important role in the development and dissemination of direction and expert advice to teams of Engineers in the five regions that deliver its mandate to improve safety of the rail network. Rail Safety and Security has hands-on Engineers in British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Quebec, Ontario and the Atlantic provinces. In addition, the Engineers in the regions also perform inspection duties to keep a pulse on safety performance of the Canadian rail network.
While working with the industry to establish and maintain safety standards, you will have the opportunity to be an integral part of the evolution of Canada’s transportation system. The meaningful work you conduct would have a direct, tangible impact for Canadians.
The reporting location for this position is at 427 Laurier West Street, Ottawa. This position occasionally requires to travel locally, regionally, and sometimes nationally to conduct inspections and training. Duties will be performed in an office environment as well as various indoor and outdoor environments such as railway sites or yards.
Office attendance of a minimum of three days per week required in accordance with latest TBS policy, and subject to change: Direction on prescribed presence in the workplace
Although the positions are located in the NCR, applications from individuals in different regions, who are prepared to spend 3 days per week at a specified Transport Canada office in their respective region, will be considered.
Three (3) indeterminate positions will be staffed as a result of this selection process.
A qualified pool may be established and used to staff this or other similar positions with various tenures or language profiles within Transport Canada.

EDUCATION:
ED: Graduation with a degree from a recognized university in either civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.
Occupational Certification:
Education which meets the requirements for eligibility for certification as a professional engineer in Canada (please see note 1).

EX2: *Experience working on engineering projects managing relationships with stakeholder representatives.
EX3: *Experience prioritizing and managing multiple priorities with tight or conflicting deadlines.
*Experience is defined as experience normally acquired with having performed work, as part of regular duties of the candidate, for a period of at least (1) year following graduation from a post-secondary institution.
EXPERIENCE:
AEX1: Experience in the development or oversight of regulations or standards.
AEX2: Experience in applying rules, standards, regulations, guidelines, processes, or procedures in engineering work, or performing engineering work, related to railway operations.
AEX3: Experience with the design, inspection, maintenance, construction, or management of bridge infrastructure.
AEX4: Experience in drainage management, and/or hydrogeological assessment.
AEX5: Engineering experience related to the design, construction, evaluation, maintenance, or alteration of railway works.
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
OR1: Physical Environment: this position may require on occasion, physical effort to climb railway structures, equipment, or facilities on sites where the access is difficult, and the terrain is rugged.
OR2: Ability and willingness to travel at short notice by all modes of transportation.
OR3: Ability and willingness to work overtime when necessary.
