Work environment

The Geological Survey of Canada’s Atlantic (GSCA) Division office is located along the shores of the Bedford Basin in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, on the campus of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO). In addition to GSCA, BIO houses other Federal Government offices such as Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and the Canadian Coast Guard. The campus is easily accessed from Dartmouth, Halifax or surrounding communities, with regular transit service; and is accessible by bike. The nearby Burnside area offers restaurants and shopping, and you can enjoy views of the Bedford Basin while walking around campus during your lunch break.

Working at Natural Resources Canada means developing leadership skills, fostering teamwork, and supporting creativity and innovation. Canada’s governments depend on geoscience to inform policy, manage the country’s landmass and develop its natural resources responsibly.

The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), established in 1842, is the national organization for geoscientific information and research, producing cutting-edge, authoritative geoscience to support mineral exploration, energy resource development, climate change research, marine and coastal resilience, natural hazards mapping and national sovereignty. The GSC is proud to create a workplace that supports an accessible, equitable, inclusive, and diverse workforce at the ready to tackle current and future science challenges. The GSC provides a stimulating work environment with a passionate team and promotes work-life balance.

Laboratory staff use a variety of equipment to work in conjunction with research scientists to advance Canada’s knowledge of marine geoscience. We use innovative techniques and methods to produce scientific data supporting marine spatial planning, offshore wind potential, hazards, changing climate, stratigraphic studies, and georesources. This work helps to support government planning and policy making around the use of the offshore.

At Natural Resources Canada, you can enjoy diverse employment opportunities, a range of career development programs, and a learning culture that supports your progress on an ongoing basis. We support balancing your work and private life by offering the benefits of flexible work arrangements.
