Research Scientist – Key Duties
The research scientist will lead a laboratory research team within the Exposure and Biomonitoring Division of the Environmental Health Science and Research Bureau of Health Canada. The work will focus on developing and applying analytical chemistry methods and techniques and using advanced equipment (e.g. LC-MS and GC-MS) for the analysis of chemicals in environmental and biological matrices.
The key duties of the role include:
- Planning and conducting scientific research that demonstrates innovation, generates productive outcomes and recognition, and is impactful (e.g. to science-based policies, regulations, and services as well as to the scientific field in general).
- Leading the generation, submission and review process for peer-reviewed scientific publications.
- Participating in national and/or international committees and working groups that align with the Bureau’s environmental health research mandate.
- Reviewing scientific manuscripts in areas of expertise, as a peer reviewer.
- Ensuring funds are expended appropriately according to approved project plans, timelines and budgets.
- Modelling behaviours and practices that adhere to the values and ethics of the organization at all times.

EDUCATION
Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of the natural sciences related to the duties of the position, or the employer-approved alternative for the SE classification. (See Note 1).
Note 1: The employer-approved alternative for the SE classification is an acceptable master’s or bachelor’s degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. PRODUCTIVITY
Productivity or recognition is required for all positions in the Research Scientist sub-group (SE-RES) (Revised October 1, 1999).
Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
• Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
• Operational research and scientific analysis;
• Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.
E1: Significant* and recent** experience in research proposals writing, management of research projects, including employee supervision and budgeting.
E2: Significant* and recent** experience in the development and validation of analytical methods, including sample preparation for detection and quantitation of chemicals in both biological and environmental matrices using low and high resolution LC-MS and GC-MS analyses.
E3: Significant* experience in publishing as first and/or corresponding author in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
E4: Significant* experience in the interpretation of results in human biomonitoring and environmental monitoring studies, and the presentation of interpreted research results at scientific conferences and/or symposia.
* “significant” means having acquired this experience over a period of 5 years or more. SE-RES classification and levels are determined through an incumbent-based approach: the researcher’s achievements will determine their level.
SE-RES-1: A research scientist who has made some expert-reviewed contributions and has sufficient experience to contribute to departmental goals.
SE-RES-2: A research scientist who is recognized by peers as knowledgeable in an area of specialty, either has worked in and led a small project team of scientific/technical personnel or carried out individual in-depth inquiries to support the delivery of the sectoral or departmental mandate.
SE-RES-3: A research scientist who is recognized by peers as a national expert in an area of specialty, and has led a team of scientific and technical personnel or carried out in-depth inquiries to successfully deliver on the immediate, or contribute to intermediate and long-term, outcomes of the sector/department.
SE-RES-4: A research scientist who is recognized as an authority in broad areas of specialty and who has strategically conceptualized the course of research activity within the sector/department leading to the achievement of the intermediate, and contributing to the long-term, outcomes of the sector/department.
