Work environment

The position and most staff work in the Village of Fort Simpson, with a satellite office located in the community of Nahanni Butte. Fort Simpson (Lı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ – ‘place where rivers come together’) is located at the confluence of the Liard and Mackenzie Rivers. It has a population of around 1,200 people, predominantly Dehcho Dene and Métis. Fort Simpson is accessible year-round by air, by ferry in the summer and by ice bridge in the winter. The summers have average high temperatures in the low 20s while winter temperatures are in the low -20s. Summers have long days with almost perpetual daylight. The winter offers opportunities for aurora viewing and cross-country skiing. Amenities in town include a general store, post office, bank, gas station, elementary and high schools, library, gymnasium, fitness centre, an ice rink and curling ice (seasonal), swimming pool (seasonal), hotels, airport, RCMP detachment, health centre.

Nahanni National Park Reserve is cooperatively managed by the Dehcho First Nations and Parks Canada. The park is about a 1.5-hour flight from headquarters. Roughly 1000 visitors journey to Nahanni each year to enjoy its majestic mountains and perhaps catch a glimpse of some of the species that call Nahanni home including grizzly bear, wolverine, Dall’s sheep, mountain goats, and woodland caribou. The parks offer spectacular paddling, climbing, and hiking opportunities.

Graduate from a recognized post-secondary institution with a degree or diploma in a field relevant to the duties of the position, or an equivalent combination of education, training, or experience.

• Experience in program management including the management of human and financial resources;
• Experience in leading multi-disciplinary teams to manage complex files and strategic issues;
• Experience in leading strategic relationships and engagement processes with the public, stakeholder groups, other levels of government and/or Indigenous communities to meet common goals.

📌OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
• Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation;
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required;
• Sit for extended periods when reading and preparing material, working at a computer and attending meetings;
• Travel will be required by air, on land or water, sometimes to remote locations by various modes and on short notice.

• Obtain and maintain Reliability level security clearance;
• Valid class 5 driver’s license;
• Required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks (When position is located in an area classified as isolated and remote, a pre-employment medical examination of an individual and his/her dependents may be required);
