Duties

Field Operations Worker (Stream 1):

Under direction from the Farm Operations Supervisor, the Field Worker coordinates, implements and maintains agricultural operations at the Ottawa Research and Development Centre, located at the Central Experimental Farm. The Field Worker is part of a dynamic team that supports innovative agricultural research programs. This task oriented role requires the ability to operate an assortment of implements, tractors, and other specialized equipment including, but not limited to: tillers, cultivators, planters, seeders, spreaders, cutters, foragers, sprayers, combines, and harvesters. Other responsibilities include cleaining and data collection on harvested crops, among other tasks including relevant record keeping and documentation. Following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and adhering to organizational health and safety guidelines, procedures and directives are expected.

Greenhouse and Growth Chambers Worker (Stream 2):

Under the direction of the Growth Facilities Supervisor, the Greenhouse and Growth Chambers worker coordinates, implements and maintains greenhouse and growth chamber operations for the Ottawa Research and Development Centre, located at the Central Experimental Farm. The Greenhouse and Growth Chambers Worker is part of a dynamic team that supports innovative agricultural research programs. This task oriented role involves the use of horticultural equipment. Responsibilities include: all aspects of plant care; monitoring and adjusting environmental parameters; application of pesticides; cleaning and disinfecting growth facilities; preparing growing mediums and potting; ensuring relevant record keeping; general housekeeping, among other tasks. Following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and adhering to organizational health and safety guidelines, procedures and directives are expected.

Immediate need : One permanent full time field operations worker position as well as one permanent full-time greenhouse and growth chamber worker position will be staffed.

A pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures.

In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process and there is a temporary need, they may be considered for acting, deployment, assignment or secondment opportunities.

•Secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
BOTH STREAMS
•Experience using Microsoft software applications such as Outlook, Excel or Word.
•Experience in preparing and applying pesticide or fertilizer solutions.
•Experience in recording and maintaining accurate records of tasks performed and collected data.

STREAM 1
•Experience working in agricultural operations in a field environment.

STREAM 2
•Experience working in a greenhouse, nursery, or with growth chamber.

•Known allergies must be controlled through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.
•Possession or ability and willingness to obtain the Ontario Pesticide Grower’s Safety Certification.
•Ability and willingness to obtainthe following certifications and/or trainings: transportation of dangerous goods, aerial lift and fall arrest, forklift and welding.
•Ability and willingness to work with chemicals and pesticides.
•Possession of a valid, class G of Ontario driver’s license, or other provincial/territorial equivalency.
•Ability and willingness to work overtime including evenings and weekends and statutory holidays.
•Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (greenhouses, outdoors, cold, hot, dust, and noise).
•Ability and willingness to do occasional heavy lifting up to 25 kgs.
