Duties

The duties include but are not limited to a combination of the following:
• Design, recommend, and implement methodologies to compile and manipulate large datasets. For example, datasets describing forest fires, weather, topography, vegetation, socio-economic factors, and human land use. Perform quality control on these datasets and apply to models relevant to wildland fire science.
• Develop, evaluate and implement fire behaviour models and build into computer applications and tools.
• Performs spatial data management and analysis using geographic information systems.
• Participate and lead in field data collection activities. And maintain and operate scientific instruments and equipment in the field.
• Develop, coordinate, and interacts with clients and researchers collaboratively to deliver knowledge mobilization related to wildland fire science and fire danger rating systems.

The Great Lakes Forestry Centre (GLFC) is an internationally recognized forest science centre specializing in forest insect pest management, forest ecology, productivity, and impact of forest disturbances including wildfire. A diverse group of scientific researchers, policy analysts, and administrative staff work to maintain a creative and stimulating work environment. The research centre is located in the Great Lakes region with easy access to many outdoor activities during all seasons.

These positions will be located on-site at the Great Lakes Forestry Center, 1219 Queen St. E, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The work arrangements will follow current Government of Canada guidelines. Full-time work schedule, Monday-Friday, 37.5 hours per week – extended or irregular work hours may be necessary, for example, for field-work and travel.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff 3 term positions:
• Fire Analyst Programmer
• Fire Science Analyst
• Wildfire Research Analyst

Additionally, a pool of candidates (fully or partially qualified) may be established through this process to fill the same or similar positions within Natural Resources Canada.

Education:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position such as environmental science (forestry, geography) or computer science (see Note).

Note:
The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
EX1. Experience determining research sources, methods, techniques and practices.
EX2. Experience compiling, synthesizing and analyzing large datasets from scientific sources.
EX3. Experience in assisting with the preparation of scientific and technical papers.
EX4. Experience preparing datasets for computer modelling applications for the analysis of science-based data.

Asset Education:
AEDU. Post-graduate degree from a post-secondary institution in a field of science related to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Asset Experience:
AEX1. Experience in conducting field research.
AEX2. Programming experience such as developing, maintaining, or improving software with at least one high level language, including but not limited to Python, C, Java, R.
AEX3. Experience collaborating with operational fire management agencies.

Asset Knowledge:
AKN1. Knowledge of models and decision support tools important for management of forest fires in Canada (E.g. The Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System (CFFDRS)).
AKN2. Knowledge of the physical fire environment and its relation to fire behaviour and risk.

Asset Abilities:
AAB1. Ability to use programming languages for modelling, simulation or analysis of scientific data.
AAB2. Ability to use Geographic Information Systems including ESRI and open sources software in analysis and to produce databases, maps, and other digital products.
AAB3. Ability to prepare and deliver presentations to targeted audiences.

A medical examination from Health Canada certifying physical fitness for field work may be required.
